Continuing study programs - Barcelona

Light changes our perception and our impressions. It constrains the way we live and how we see spaces. And it is the most flexible aesthetic material for constructing visual images.

The aim of the Intensive Postgraduate in Architectural Lighting Design is to teach the students how to use light as a powerful tool for design and expression. Whether it is natural or artificial, light is always present in any space, reacting with the people and objects around.

Both natural and artificial light require specialised knowledge. Artificial light, which is developed using constantly evolving technologies, also requires a thorough study of its technical characteristics. Today, lighting designers are essential when planning the design of any space.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

- Provide the students with a general overview of the art and techniques of lighting.

- Provide the knowledge needed of lighting technology, as applied to lighting spaces.

- Train the students in the use of up-to-date lighting design and calculation tools.

- Provide a basic knowledge for understanding the process of creating a scenic lighting design.

- Put the knowledge acquired into practice in a variety of workshops as a method for consolidating that knowledge.

- Train professionals who are able to think in terms of light and to solve the lighting for their projects with architectural lighting and scenic lighting.

SPECIFIC COURSE METHODOLOGY

The Postgraduate in Architectural Lighting Design looks at light and its design from an intuitive, experimental perspective. The technical aspects rely on practicals, exercises, workshops and visits to companies and construction sites. The teaching staff is made up of working lighting designers and experts from the sector.

Starting out from the essentials of perception, lighting technology and the culture of light, we arrive at the technical issues involved in creating lighting solutions and making them viable.

The architectural lighting content provides tools for developing lighting projects for a variety of architectural spaces, which can be interiors, exteriors, façades, unusual elements, public spaces, retail spaces, homes, museums, etc.

The urban lighting content introduces the students to an area that is of great interest to public institutions, offering them practical information through the analysis of case studies.

The scenic lighting content presents the students with the cultural and social factors involved in lighting ephemeral and scenic spaces. Visits are made to exhibition centres and theatres, with the possibility of viewing an installation.

STUDENT PROFILE

Individuals with diplomas and/or degrees in Architecture, Fine Arts, Product Design, Interior Design and Engineering with an interest in lighting who wish to gain the knowledge needed to develop lighting projects from both an aesthetic and a technical perspective.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

The course offers a general, basic education that permits the students to tackle lighting projects for architectural and engineering studies and in lighting design or manufacturing companies, where they can complete their training in the real-life world of work.

COLLABORATION WITH COMPANIES

So that the students can develop their final project in a real-life labour market context, the IED Master collaborates with selected companies.

In previous editions of the Postgraduate, projects, workshops and training activities were held with renowned companies from the world of lighting, such as Osram, Rosco, Dialux, LEDscontrol, LED.COM, iGuzzini, ERCO, Simon Lighting, Fluvia, Viabizzuno, LAMP, SALVI, Marset, Santa & Cole, JVV, and Escenotecnic.

Artemide España has been a strategic partner of the Postgraduate since its inception.

IED Barcelona is also present at emblematic events in the city of Barcelona. The Postgraduate students can take part in the lighting design for one of the courtyards in the historic centre in competition with other design schools in the city as part of LLUM BCN, a festival of new technologies and light that transforms Barcelona into a spectacle that involves all kinds of audiences.

COORDINATOR

Each Postgraduate has the advice of a specialist coordinator in the field.
