Product DesignTransportation Design

The Undergraduate Degree in Product Design (240 ECTS) prepares professionals who can develop projects of technological and technical nature, from consumer electronics or capital goods, to furniture, lighting or decoration objects. Physical and functional characteristics are taught to obtain a product to be manufactured industrially and perform as intended with the highest efficiency and quality. Also acquirement of skills to value and solve problems, needs and requirements affecting the formalization of a product, determining its industrial quality and proper integration into the market. Lastly, the comprehension that design is not only recommendable for companies to improve their efficiency and profitability: it also has a social function, because its intervention conditions environment quality and people’s life.

Professional outcomes: Product designer, urban furniture, products for mobility, packaging, home accessories, material research, 3D modeller, merchandising, etc.

The Undergraduate Degree in Product Design offers a formative path where students learn to comprehend and anticipate market demands, working with business intents and translating them into a defined project to be carried out industrially. It promotes the relevance of concept itself, to foresee trends and consumer styles, thanks to the understanding of market exigencies. It also provides knowledge of materials and production technologies in order to carry out the projects. Beyond the theoretical comprehension of the project, students focus on analysis of technologies, ergonomics and usability.

The first year of this degree is focused on acquiring basic concepts of design, culture and project methods. Students learn to dare to create and communicate.
The second year is concentrated on developing one’s own creativity individually, and starting to study the speciality tools, such as: modelling, productive, mechanical and digital systems, sketch and storytelling, Rhino, Cad and communication using Illustrator, Photoshop and oral communication.
The third year means the beginning of collaborations with companies and new, more technical and complex projects, with prototypes and real costs. Work is developed in transversal teams composed by students of Product, Interior and Transportation design. In addition, new materials will be studied such as sustainable or technological materials, nanomaterials, etc.
During the fourth year students take a compulsory intership in a company and each one chooses a professional profile. Creative management acquires a great relevance through project management and rethinking, modifying and refining projects to respond properly to users’ and market’s needs. Lastly, the degree final project is developed in collaboration with real companies, where prototypes are produced. In successful cases, those prototypes will evolve and manufacture to be launched into the market.
