Main goal of the course is training students to conceive their works as a unique spirit, merging feelings and perceptions with a rigorous functional disposition. They learn to interact with the Italian design system that complex and unique network of relations among Italian/international Designers, schools, Made in Italy businesses producing furniture/lamps and customer companies. 

The specialization in Set Design trains a professional figure which designs the physical scenario where an event takes place in, designing the set, selecting the materials, the type of lighting, the multimedia supports in order to concentrate communication on the audience and capture the media’s interest. 

Career opportunities – Interior Designer, Exhibit Designer, Retail Designer, Restaurant Designer, Set Designer, Designer for Hospitality, Service Designer.

Title - This BA is recognised by Italian Ministry of Education Research (MIUR) as an Academic Diploma Level I and awards 180 credits.

Context – The global market has a growing demand for eclectic interior designers with competences both in the architectural composition of a space and in the design of services, to organize and improve the relation between space and people.

Methodology and structure - The student acquires a broad range of competences: cultural, technical and project based. Cultural elements connected to design, architecture and art but also sociology and anthropology are all subjects of study, necessary to comprehend the evolutionary phenomena of behaviour. 

Students are introduced to marketing, an essential tool for analysing brand values and market positioning of the companies the interior designer collaborates with. They gain their own solid project development method that, starting from ethical, social and sustainable values, allow them to acquire a mindset for strategic design. Once the design mindset has been defined, an accurate definition of spaces highlighting of psychological and physical wellbeing is developed through a careful use of materials, colours and lights. 

To this end, the Designer must possess those expressive tools allowing to develop, assess and explain the project: the pencil, 3-D modelling and rendering software. 
Students who chose the Specialisation in Set Design have the organization, supply and set up of the scenography, among the tasks required, all demanding managing and operational skills.

Caterina Malinconico - Course Coordinator
Architect. Besides her role as Course coordinator and Teacher at IED, she works as freelance dealing with building restructuring. In 2008 she specialized in energy certification.  

Federica Bosoni

Federica Bosoni
Graduated in interior Design at IED Milano, she worked as Graphic Designer and Interior Designer. Since 2006, she has been collaborating with IED and she is coordinator of English language Product Design and Interior Design courses. She teaches Design Methods in the English language Interior Design course.

Marina Botta

Marina Botta
Architect, PhD (Politecnico, Milano and KTH, Stockholm) and Environmental Designer (MIT, Boston). Researcher on building and urban renovation with respect for the existing and sustainability. She has cooperated with several universities, public housing authorities and Stockholm planning office. Anna Costella
Anna Costella, holds a Degree in Architecture from the Politecnico di Milano and also completed a Masters in Design and Management. She currently works as an independent consultant and Interior Designer.

Marta Dal Vecchio

Marta Dal Vecchio
Graduated in Interior Architecture and Computer Graphic Design at IED.  In 2001 she achieved a Master degree in E-design at the Politecnico di Milano. She started her career working with architecture studios, as well as with Futurarium - School of Art Architecture and Design. Since '97 she’s been collaborating with IED, teaching modellism and coordinating Summer Courses and Special Projects. Francesca Perani
Architect graduated at Polytechnic of Milan, she co-founded Spectacularch!, architecture, interior, brand, web and app design studio. She studied in Australia and Belgium and worked in London, Brisbane, Turin, Bergamo and Milan at Enzo Mari's studio. She’s currently vice president of Bergamo Chartered Architects Association. Vittorio Pieroni
Graduated at IED Milano in Interior Design, he specialised in Hotel Design at Poli.design Milan. He collaborates with HotLab Yacht and designs mainly for private owners and international shipyards. From 2008, he has been working with IED as yacht design thesis Assistant. Beatrice Spirandelli
Architect with postgraduate international qualification in energy efficiency improvement of building facades, she has an extensive professional experience in the use of natural materials in architecture and interior design. She teaches in several training courses in the field of sustainability in construction, writes for various magazines of national circulation and wrote with Marco Moro the book La casa ecologica. Beatrice Vezzosi
Architect graduated at Polytechnic in Milan, Bachelor of Art in Interior Design at IED. She developed different technical and artistic skills becoming CTU at the Court of Milan and Energy Certificator. Collaborates with modeling and architectural firms in projects of interior and furniture and developing her manual abilities.

Marco Vicinanza

Marco Vicinanza
Marco Vicinanza holds an Architecture Degree from Politecnico Milan. He gained extensive experience collaborating with diverse architecture firms before opening his own studio in Milan. Marco has designed for offices and public spaces as well as restoration and renovation projects for residential spaces. In addition he also designs custom-made furniture.

Matteo Moscatelli
Architect with PhD in Architecture, urban design, conservation of housing and landscape. He won many awards for his projects. Currently he teaches at IED, Politecnico in Milan and University of Southern California. He is the author of the monographies On the road: Milano, Firenze 2015, Zurigo. Master Degree in Product Design and a passion for food design. She wrote for Essen a Taste Magazine, Leifoodie and Dispensa and worked as Food Stylist and Food Event planner. She’s currently dealing with food taboos, food anthropology and entomophagy, the practice of eating insects. Cofounder of Entonote’s project.

Graduated in applied arts, since 1997 he’s been working in the field of design, mosaics and virtual elaborations. Besides numerous collaborations with architects, design studios and art ateliers, he took part at various exhibitions in Milan, Ravenna, Paris, Strasbourg and Miami. Chiara Caberlon
She graduated in Architecture at Politecnico, Milan. She worked as an Interior Designer for many fashion companies and international banks. In 2004, the CaberlonCaroppi Hotel&Design studio was founded and since then it has been working on projects for a number of prestigious international names like Hilton, Intercontinental, Holiday Inn, Ostuni Rosa Marina Resort and Enjoy Garda Hotel. In 2010 and 2012 the studio was invited as ambassadors of Italian Design to Equip’hotel in Paris with the projects Room 2.0 and then Room under the Moon.

Rosario Distaso
He studied in Milan, Oslo and Brisbane, graduating from the Politecnico in Milan with a Degree in Architecture in 1999. Worked for several offices in Germany, Italy and the Australian firm Donovan Hill Architects. Founded his own practice bloomscape architecture in 2004, specialising in interiors and retail architecture (design concepts, brand space and store roll-out). Chiara Spagnoli Gabardi
She graduated in Political Sciences and got Masters in Screenwriting & Film Production. She is a Film Critic, Journalist Member of the Foreign Press Association in New York & Italian Association of Journalists in Milan, Filmmaker and Visual Artist. Tatiana Ponomareva
She graduated in Communication Sciences at Sociological College of Moscow State University, immediately becoming Corporate Identity Consultant for Moscow Film Festival. In 2007, she got Event Scenography degree at IED Milano. As independent consultant, she assists several architecture firms in Milan and Moscow, taking care of architectural design. In 2012, she is Co-founder of G8.PROJECTS.&.SERVICES, a practice born from the holistic idea of project integration that creates a personal and unique experience for the client benefit.

Maddalena Tibertelli De Pisis

Maddalena Tibertelli De Pisis
With a Master Degree in Contemporary Art History at Università Statale in Milan, she is Art Historian and Archive Curator. After an experience working for Artforum and the Brooklyn Museum in New York, she is now manager and curator of the archive of the Associazione per Filippo de Pisis in Milan, as well as for other art artists’ archives of the 20th c. Since 2012 she is PhD student at the Sorbonne in Paris. 

  • I year

    • Perception Theory and the Psychology of Form

      The course illustrates the scientific theories that explain the functioning of our senses and connects them to research about the psychology of shape. The course also focuses on the relationship between color and material, analysing the properties of natural and artificial materials and of superficial sensorial responses. Furthermore, the course teaches the student to use color atlases (the Munsell System, NCS, Pantone, Pantone Tessile TPX9).

    • Design Methods

      The course provides students with the analytical tools to examine the relationship between space, people, market and brand. Furthermore, the course focuses on the various step of design development, from the briefing to the final project. Hence, it uses the Design Thinking method to analyze and understand behaviors, people’s needs, functionality, technological and technical issues.

    • Technical Drawing

      The course explores the principles of descriptive, projective and perspective geometry, which are preparatory to technical design and the use of 2D and 3D project design software. The course focuses on freehand design and deals with issues related to measure evaluation, and reproduction and representation on paper. Then students learn to use software for 2D design of objects and architecture.

    • Graphic Design

      The course sets off with free-hand drawing as a representation tool. The course explores the use of the pencil as an expressive tool in order to teach students to perceive proportions, sizes and shapes. The second part of the course provides students with the essential software knowledge and basic notions about graphic design and image processing software. 

    • Material Typologies 1

      The course focuses on analyzing the behavior of materials: an essential crucial knowledge to translate an idea into architecture and to best look for the best performance, exploiting the expressive potential of different materials. The course deals with the structure of a building in all its components and studies the natural and artificial materials used in the definition of an interior space.

    • History of Contemporary Art

      The course explores the main art movements and its main protagonists. It focuses on the historical development of art and on an in-depth critical understanding of artistic codes and artworks as complex visual texts and as phenomena that narrate cultural, social and aesthetic evolutions, in relation to other forms of expression and of communication (architecture, design, etc.).

       

    • History of Design 1

      The course provides the student with a basic knowledge to understand the evolution of shapes and the conception of architecture throughout history. It deals with the situation of design, starting from the industrial revolution and goes on to analyse the project philosophy of the Masters of the Modern Movement, of architects and designers who have contributed to the history of Italian design from the Post War period up to the present.

    • Modeling Techniques 1

      The course provides the theoretical and practical tools to produce models using the most suitable materials for the project models and the different design student to examine the concept and to assess its formal essence. By defining the project from a 3D perspective, the model makes it possible to assess proportions and volumes in real terms.

    • Introduction to Cultural Marketing

      The course explores the role of marketing in the definition of a project strategy and its relationship with design. The concept of market as a place where businesses compete is studied. The course stresses positioning research techniques, in order to determine strategically brand and product value. Finally, the marketing mix is analysed, which studies the product in relation to the market in order to define promotion and advertising actions.

    • Design 1

      Students are asked to design a residential unit for young university students. The acquired method helps students to analyze the needs and behaviors of the people who live in this space, to analyze all the issues related to the functions of this space and choose the furnishings of a brand aligned with the needs and lifestyle of the inhabitants. Students work on preliminary project and then to definitive project through technical drawings, models and digital presentation.

  • II year

    • Sociology of Culture

      Sociology, as the science of social phenomena, represents one of the most effective tools to understand people behaviors. Hence, it is one of the most valid instruments to study the development of cultures, of ethical and social values, of lifestyles. The course studies the techniques and the tools which allow to understand lifestyles and dynamics of social interaction.

    • Drawing Techniques and Technologies

      The course aims at refining rendering skills, from free hand drawing to digital tools, to favor communication effectiveness in the presentation of an idea. The project is therefore described in all its stages by means of the most suitable technique: free-hand drawings and digital renderings achieved with the latest and most updated software.

    • Materials Typologies 2

      The course focuses on issues related to the new technologies of sustainable design and their applications within the construction industry, to broaden the understanding of how to apply materials and structures in the design of interior spaces. In particular, the course focuses on the relationship between the project and the energy and sustainability characteristics of the material, thus also including construction and structural aspects.

    • Design 2

      Aim of this design course is testing new instruments and techniques of Design Thinking. The design theme is the retail design and more exactly a concept store for a company of Italian food system that has a strong brand image and produces high quality food. The project must therefore start from the analysis of the company’s positioning on the market and then find out who are the people who could get into the concept store. The analysis goes on through a research of concept stores in the world that can offer suggestions for the project.

    • History of Contemporary Architecture 1

      The history of architecture is analysed from the point of view of project methodologies and the technological and social contexts. The course explores the heritage of the Modern Movement and its expression in various geographical contexts, both European and international. Through the analysis of buildings, projects and documents, the characteristics of the architecture of the last fifty years are outlined.

    • 3D Computer Model-Making Techniques

      The course focuses on digital image processing in a 3D context. The first part of the course analyses 3D surface modelling software, automatic generation of perspectives, views and sections, shadows, surface texturing and rendering. The second part of the course explores rendering and animation to create, view and assess 3D spaces with texturing and lighting techniques.

    • Modelling Techniques 2

      This advanced course aims at supporting the project design courses, for which a thorough knowledge of materials and of how to use them carefully from a sustainable point of view is essential. During workshops, students focus on single materials, their technical features and fields of application. The practical part of the course is constituted by a simulated application on the project model.

    • History of Design 2

      The course aims at searching of a personal architectural language. It goes into depth with these languages in different geographical contexts, to provide a historical and critical knowledge of formal archetypes and main exponents. Through the analysis of architectures and products, the compositional, formal, and expressive features of projects and designers of recent years are studied.

    • Design Management

      The course deals with the concept of brand, which constitutes the main element in the definition of the values that the company wants to communicate to the market and of the values that the market actually perceives. Secondly, the course focus on the consumer, as well as his approach to objects and spaces, in the light of experience marketing, which today represents the main lever in the positioning process of brands and products.

    • Product Design

      The course focuses on the design of spaces related to the concept of well-being. This theme drives students to spatial, sensory and emotional experimentation for the wellness of the people. Students are asked to design a place where people find a well-being environment, a hybrid space where there are multiple functions, a space located in high traffic places such as stations and airports. Its background consists in a research on the concept of well-being and on the way people interpret the wellness. Students then analyze which areas, materials, finishes and lighting can give that concept of well-being thought by the designer.

  • III year

    • Virtual Architecture

      The student learns to use software for photo rendering to recreate products, objects, materials, lights to make them look similar to a photograph. Hence, the designer can create 3D objects and environments through photo-like images in order to assess the material and chromatic choices of the project.

    • Layout and Techniques

      The course deals with issues related to the communication of the project and the creation of professional tools, such as the portfolio of projects to presented to the customer. The course focuses on how to communicate the genesis of project idea by the composition of a storyboard, intended as an organizational chart of the project narrative. Moreover, the students learn to use software to generate multimedia communication tools for the project.

    • Design 3

      This course aims to design services integrated with the design of the space. To facilitate the understanding of this new project scenario, it is required to design a hospitality space integrated with a restaurant area. Students must design a multipurpose space which has the sensory and material qualities, but also the services to be used to organize activities, management and experiences of the people who live this space. 

    • Design 4

      This project is the preliminary to Final Project laboratory, which takes place in the second semester. Final Project is in made collaboration with companies or associations, or may be proposed by the students. The student choose at the beginning of the course which theme he/she will develop.

       

    • Phenomenology of Contemporary Arts

      The course goes into depth with the development of phenomenology, which reveals the relationship between reality and artistic expression. The course helps to understand how contemporary forms of creativity (art, fashion, advertising, design) are born, represented, and perceived.

    • Cultural Anthropology

      The course aims at identifying the shapes and symbolic relationships in the collective imagination, in relation to the tangible and intangible goods of post-war culture. In particular, the course focuses on the recent hybridization of design with emerging social practices, communication fluxes, the environment, technological development and cultural and social identity. The course goes into depth with the history of mankind as the evolution of the human species, as the evolution of society, and the evolution of economic anthropology.
