Multimedia illustrators create images using any technique, from traditional to digital, from water colours to the computer.

They are the professionals of the drawing board who take ideas, concepts, characters and situations and use their considerable ability of representation, mimesis and creative transfiguration of reality to bring them to life.

They have a profound knowledge of specific languages and techniques for various areas of application: from illustrations for infancy to scientific illustration, from cartoons to animation, from conventional publishing to advertising.

Illustration is part of our cultural heritage, even older than the first writings - the language of images has always been the most direct form of communication. The professional illustrator gives form to ideas, concepts, characters and situations through their extraordinary ability to render, replicate or creatively interpret reality.
Today, the professional role of the illustrator is far more complex and delineated than ever before, not only requiring accurate and detailed depictions, but also the creation of entirely new approaches to visual communication, and the investigation of ways in which diverse visual modes can interact. It is therefore vital that professional development concentrates on bringing out a individual’s creative talents, helping to reveal personality through a strong, recognisable and original style. The context in which an image is shown affects the design and analysis of the image, as each context has intrinsic cognitive effects, a different design paradigm and suitable tools. Illustration can come away from the page into other worlds, such as exhibition stands, photographic sets or other dimensions involving different design paths. The illustrator carries out various functions according to the sector in which they are employed. In the publishing industry, which includes specialisations such as educational and scientific publishing, comics and children’s illustration in general, the illustrator describes situations, summarises concepts, gives form to abstract ideas or creates a story through images. In the advertising sector, the illustrator must blend the practices of the genre with drawing ability to translate a message into an effective image. In the animation industry, whether for cinema, video, tv or internet, the illustrator works as an animation designer, able to design and create animated segments using traditional and digital tools and techniques
