The Photography course program champions new media integration, cross-disciplinary activities and liberal arts, providing students with the necessary tools and skills to translate abstract concepts and photographic ideas into observable representations.
Today’s students are challenged not just technically but – and above all – in the interpretation and rethinking of their own assumptions to expand their knowledge and ideas and become notable contributors to visual arts culture.

Title –This BA is recognized by Italian Ministry of Education Research (MIUR) as an Academic Diploma Level I and awards 180 credits.
Context – While other expressive methods and forms of communication make necessary for those who receive the message to subject to it voluntarily, photography has an overwhelming potential because it conveys its message in the very moment in which it is seen, regardless of the viewer’s decision to do so.
Methodology and structure – Bachelor Degree in Photography is an intensive undergraduate program addressed to both technical and creative aspects of current digital and analog image practices.
Students learn to produce their ideas as they assimilate the necessary cultural and technical notions to become images inventors and visual storytellers.
The course begins with a strong focus on liberal arts to help students to enrich their expressive abilities and knowledge of the environment.
They gradually learn to use professional equipment, to set up lighting and shoot pictures both outdoors and in highly specialized environments - such as the photographic studio – and to develop and print black and white films in the darkroom.
Within each semester students produce technically outstanding and always more conceptually compelling images, learning how to organize their activities, to deal with clients and design individual marketing strategies.
Liberal Arts lectures and project courses challenge students to understand cultural and social contexts, to read potential shifts in the interpretation of images through historical and contemporary perspectives thus improving their awareness of a wide range of issues.
Students are also invited to enter cross-disciplinary approaches, working collaboratively and respond to external events and activities. Each student, by attending courses concerning the different photographic genres such as commercial, editorial and artistic, have the possibility to directly experience the different specializations and make a conscious and informed decision upon completing his/her training.
This course studies our visual and aesthetic culture by experimenting with contemporary artistic research: how it relates to technical and technological innovation and to the various different forms of expression and communication. The course focuses on analysing the birth of aesthetics and the independence of art, on how the concept of art changed pursuant to the introduction of industrial machinery, the birth of photography and how it has related to traditional techniques of representation.
History of Applied Arts
The history of the arts as applied to the specific field of photography is the content of this course, whose purpose is to impart the necessary skills to recognize expressive languages and how they evolve. The course provides students with a broader view of artistic expression and of the interdisciplinary factors that influence a work’s creation.
The course enables students to facilitate, perceive and organise the inventive process that all creatives feel to be the underlying driving force behind their action. “Facilitating” means that the dynamics that lead to the conception of new images are the consequence of activities specifically shaped to generate new ideas. “Perceiving” implies the ability to identify the spontaneous inventive element for what it is. “Organising”, because the task of all designers is to be able to put creativity into shapes that can be used by the public.
Computer Graphics 1
The aim of this course is to provide students with the tools and basic techniques that are essential to the use of computer, and related devices teaching them the fundamental functionalities of the leading digital image processing software packages.
Photography Direction 1
This course lays the groundwork for studio photography and fuels – through increasingly challenging assignments – students’ creative and interpretative process.
Lessons focus both on technical and expressive issues teaching students how to handle technologies and equipment to design the light and choose the composition of their shooting.
The course starts out by conducting a critical analysis of the work of leading artists in the field, so as to identify the elements that distinguished their expressive force. Students are induced to question both their own and others’ perceptions, in order to find expressive modules that enable them to build immediate, effective channels of communication. Simultaneously a pragmatic approach to the means and expression related to analog photography and printing enables students to put the results of their experimental and creative shape into practice.
Perception Theory and Psychology of Form
This course investigates the world of sensory perception and cognitive processes, illustrating the scientific theories that explain how our senses function and correlating this with research into the psychology of form. It tackles principles of colour theory, then uses applied sciences as a means for providing the techniques for analysing the relationship between object, space and person.
This course teaches students to read the relations between contents, texts and image and the narrative processes used by the various different forms of visual communications and by the media. The aim of the course is to analyse the process of communications, setting out to examine and dismantle its mechanisms, through the methods developed by the various schools of semiotics. A closer look is taken at audiovisual communications, with a special focus on the cinema and advertising communications.
Methods and technical knowledge acquired during the first year are now deepened and related to the more specific required needs to complete the post production process. In this 2nd year of the course students are trained to reinforce the teachings they acquired during the first year, extending it with new and more advanced techniques.
Photography Direction 2
The learning process started in the first year now adds new technical principles and exercises, enabling students to acquire greater mastery of procedures and methodologies in order to build their own visual and expressive languages in relation to a variety of thematic and disciplinary areas. Lessons are divided into modules that analyze the subject specific fields of commercial photography. A special section takes a closer look at systems for controlling printing and managing the output of digital files on paper.
Building on the analytical tools taught during the first year, this advanced phase induces students to update their expressive experiences and render them in tangible form, articulating them in the various sectors of specialisation. The course proceeds by contextualising the object-subject of the shoot, so as to provide numerous stimuli for breaking out of the mindset of the merely technical exercise and creating a high degree of participation, both in studio shoots and on location.
Photography is the everyday narrative of what is going on in the modern world – and this applies in particular to its social, journalistic landscape and scientific applications – but at the same time it also bears witness to how we see reality. This course goes back over the origins and development of these photographic languages, leading students to acquire narrative capacities of their own through the medium of photography.
Phenomenology of Contemporary Arts
This course builds on the development of phenomenology as a science or a method that expounds on the relationship between reality and artistic expression, so as to impart tools for interpreting contemporary artistic phenomena and how they relate to historical and cultural contexts and to social dynamics. The teaching method helps students understand how contemporary forms of creativity come about and are represented and perceived. It also encourages students to develop an analytical and critical capacity.
Sociology of Communications
By studying the processes of the media and analysing up and coming forms of communication, this course sets out to provide students with a basic grounding in the theoretical, methodological and technical tools used to analyse the processes of communications and media, focusing on contents, languages, forms of organisation and the analysis of the target audience.
History of Cinema and Video
This course illustrates the salient milestones in the history of the cinema to the present day, describing it in terms of the relationship between technology and aesthetics. The course starts from films, then proceeds to focus in particular on certain milestone films that have pointed the way to subsequent developments and contemporary trends. The evolutions in the cinema’s styles, expressions and narratives are put into the context of the technological advances achieved by the means of production and the consequential evolution of movie language.
History of Photography
The course relinks to the contents taught on 1st year module History of Applied Arts and continues with the history of photography through the modern centuries. Students learn to recognize expressive languages and authors in relation to the historical and social background in which they developed. The course provides students, through lectures and exhibition visits, with a broader vision of artistic expression and of how inter-disciplinary actions contribute to executing a work.
This course provides students with the tools they need to understand how photographers interact with the world of communications. It imparts the most important theoretical and operational notions that students will use for acquiring a complete understanding of an insider’s view of the dynamics underpinning the preparation and development of an advertising campaign.
The contents of this course cover the historical construction and the structural and linguistic analysis of the methods of production and distribution of mass communications. Students are taken into the essential characteristics and categories of leading media markets (television, cinema, publishing and multimedia) and the strategic behaviours of the business concerns that operate in the various fields in question. The procedures studied encompass traditional and new media, the press, radio, analogical television, terrestrial digital and satellite television, the various forms of web and mobile TV and potential future scenarios.
Computer Graphics 3
The purpose of this course is to provide further professional development on advanced photographic techniques, related in particular to the production of synthesis and retouching, so as to strengthen students’ personal independence of expression. This third phase of the course induces students to acquire mastery of the means of postproduction at levels that are definitively compatible with their future practice of their chosen profession.
This course is designed to complete students’ training by achieving a further enrichment of their technical and time managing capacities. Teachings are strongly professional oriented and feature practical exercises supported by rich concepts and target research. The study plan is tailored to let students achieve mastery in a specific field of interest and subjects are strongly distinguished to challenge students in different expressive matrixes: from studio still life photography to reportage, portrait and fashion related topics.
Integrated New Media Techniques
The opportunities offered by new information and communication technologies have led to a convergence of the media, of telecommunications and of information technology itself. This course illustrates this phenomenon’s recent development and studies it in relation to leading industry trends, exploring its applications to audiovisual communications.
This course introduces students to the basic technical skills required for their elaborations, analyses professional openings for the art director and provides a guide to presentation techniques.
This workshops tackles the preparatory phases to the Final Project, laying the foundations for the metadesign phase, i.e. the strategic definition of the project, the approach to the work of researching the topics proposed and planning the subsequent stages of operations.

He founded fineartconnection, an online printing company.
Visual Artist mainly working with photography. Interested in the hybridism of the media, she used to combine the still photographic image with organic materials, digital manipulations or archival illustrations, giving birth, in her work, to new and altered forms of being. She is interested in analysing from different angles our progressive movement towards annihilation from one side, and the glimmer of eternal endurance and civilization on the other. The dialogue between preservation and destruction of existent realities constitutes the core of her work.
Photographer and Photoshop expert. Graduated at Accademia dello Spettacolo in Milan, he is Adobe Certified Expert in Photoshop. He has always been fascinated and passionated about digital image workflow and worked as a Photo Retoucher and a consultant in Turin and Milan. His career is equally divided in being a Food and Still Life Photographer, a Photo Retoucher and a Teacher, both for beginners courses and professional workshops.

Industrial Designer. Master in Design from Domus Academy. She has worked within the Domus Academy Research Center and collaborated with other studios in Milan such as Italform, Francesca Valan, Future Concept Lab, participating in different research projects and approaching different design fields: C.M.F. and trends, environmental design, playing concepts and toys. Since 2002, she has been heading the project 100%natural - monitor, dedicated to design, materials, jewelry, trends and crafts.
He has been writing for cinema for many years, among his most successful works and collaborations: I resilienti, documentary film awarded at Lampedusa film festival and selected at the Beirut International Film Festival and Cutting the grey parts, Golden Leopard at Locarno Film Festival. He works as Editor and Ghost Writer for RCS-Rizzoli Media Group and magazines.
Graduated in Arts and Photography, he has worked with photographers such as Mario Sorrenti, Tiziano Magni and Lothar Schmid. Among his clients: Arena, Piaggio, Pirelli, Ferrero, Mc Donald’s, Swatch, Sony, etc. His works are mainly digital shootings and postproduction.
He got a Ph.D. in Sociology of Communication from Catholic University Milan. Worked as Teaching Assistant in the subject of intercultural communication and history of the radio and television. Worked as a free-lance Qualitative Researcher for several university research institutes on the subject of media, technology and communication. Currently working as a Director of qualitative research in market research.

After obtaining a Fulbright Grant in 1980, he received his Master of Fine Arts at SIU Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, USA. He displayed his works in many solo shows, both in Italy and abroad. His eye is carefully attuned to beauty, history and composition. In his personal exploration he tries to capture the relationship between man and nature. Currently teaches “History and Techniques of Photography” at the Faculty of Design and Arts of Venice University (IUAV), situated in San Marino, Italy.
Sonia Marin was born in Padua on 25/02/71. She’s been living in Milan since 1989, where, along with her professional job as a freelance photographer, she is also an author.
For nine years now she has been working with the IED Milano as a lecturer in the Photography Department.
Since 1994 she has been working in the advertising photography field-still-life- realizing
editorials for International and European magazines and cooperating with major fashion and interior design Companies. She played an important part as a speaker in the” Advertising Photography” section at the Sixth Edition of the International Orvieto Photography Convention 2004.
Freelance Photographer based in Milano since 2006. She works in the commercial field, mostly as a Fashion Photographer in Italy and abroad. Glow Management in Milan represents her.

Art Critic and Art Teacher since the late Eighties. He curated art exhibitions and teaching seminars in Europe. His most popular book is Contemporanee, Costa&Nolan 1999, an important survey on the work of women artists since the Seventies. In 1955, he founded one of the first art websites, postmedia.net, which later turned into a publishing company with the name of postmedia books.
He received the Ph.D. in Semiotics from the University of Bologna, under the guide of Umberto Eco. He started teaching at the University of Pavia and since 2006 he teaches Semiotics, Rhetoric and Branding at the European Institute of Design. Former columnist for the online paper Affaritaliani.it, he commented on communication phenomena and social trends. He worked with the most important market research agencies. Among his major clients, Ace, Scavolini, Mercedes, Telecom Italia, Enel, Italian Premiership.
Digital Photographer and Video Editor with a longtime experience in the educational field.
Photographer, he founded his studio in Milan in 1989. Since then where he's been shooting fashion, beauty and still-life photos, for both commercial and editorial fields, in Italy and abroad. Since 1993 he’s been dedicated to digital postproduction with Photoshop, at first for his own productions only, then offering digital post-production services and multimedia and web communication for photographers, artists, art galleries and communication agencies.
He studied Philosophy and Psychology in Italy and Photography and Visual Arts in London, where he received the Higher Diploma in Advanced Photography at the London College of Printing. He created large-format works which have been shown in Italy and abroad, including Aktuell '83 in Munich and Documenta VIII, in Kassel. He has been gradually introducing new languages in his work, creating multimedia projects and sound installations. He has created temporary and permanent installations in galleries, museums and public spaces worldwide.
Independent Photo-editor and Curator living between Milano and Rio de Janeiro, specialized in latin-american photography. She has curated several shows in many important venues in Rio de Janeiro, has worked as Assistant Photoeditor for Specchio+ de La Stampa and has been a Contributor to Italian Vogue since 2007. In 2011 her project on Southamerican landscape photography was a finalist in the Transatlantica Photo España Prize. She runs Caju Photoagency and she’s Project Manager at Vogue Italia & Glamour.
Designer, he started his career in a communication agency based in Frankfurt. During this experience, he won the prestigious IF Design Award in the Digital communication Section. In 2013 he founded a digital branding called 150UP, a small studio which works for customers like Barilla, Pirelli and RedBull and develops in house APP as “The First Calendar”.

Independent Picture Editor and Photo Consultant. She recently set up and directed the picture department of newsmagazine Newsweek. She previously worked at D magazine, worked or contributed as Picture Editor for Mondadori, Grazia Casa, and La Repubblica newspaper. Her focus is mainly in documentary photography but through her work, she has been dealing with the most various fields of photography, understanding and engaging with both editorial and commercial aspects.
After completing his art studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, he studied photography, scenography and environmental arts at Taik (University of Art and Design) in Helsinki. He currently works as Fashion and Portrait Photographer.
He is specialized in interiors and still life photography, working with clients such as IED, Fiorucci, Kerastase, L'Oreal, Shu Uemura, Interior, Cosmopolitan, Assolombarda. Since 2006, thanks to his experience in the use of photographic equipment from analog studio and developing and printing processes, he is in charge of IED Milano darkroom lab.

In 2013 he graduated with honors at IED with a thesis followed by curator Angela Madesani that ended with the book Landscape’s hypothesis, a research on landscape and its hypothetical meanings. While completing his studies he started a collaboration with Domus magazine. Currently he is pursuing several projects related to exploring the interaction dynamics between man and nature. With an eye to the signs that occur in the landscape he tries to sort out the possible meanings that are put on stage in a photographic composition.
Music videos and documentaries Director. Graduated in Contemporary History, she attended the screenplay course at Civica Scuola di Cinematografia in Milan, realizing some short films. She worked as Assistant Director for films and clips. In 2002 she organized a traveling cinema, supported by the UN, in post-war zones in Kosovo. From 2003 to 2005 she was teacher in a project within San Vittore jail in Milan. From that experience came out The Great Fardillo the docudrama. From 2005 she has been working as Director and Producer with MTV and La7.
She started her career as Journalist in 1981, writing for L'Unità and indipendent publications. In 2000, she became Senior Editor of the website KwMusica, as part of Kataweb portal. She took actively part in the process of rethinking and redesigning the new Marie Claire. Other journalistic collaborations include among others Il Mattino di Napoli and Io Donna. She has also worked for television and radio as Editor and Author.
Degree in Philosophy from the Università degli Studi di Milano. Apart from IED he is currently teaching communication and music event planning at Università Cattolica of Milan, IES Abroad Italy, Università degli Studi di Milano Bicocca. He’s been Music Advisor for commercials, Tv programs, movies and documentary films, video productions; as music publisher he also acts as promoter, press agent and manager for the artists he represents in Italy.

It’s a high level lab that allows future photographers to reach experiences connected with development and printing as project tools. Here it is possible to develop films and print in black and white.
IED has two libraries: one, located in via Sciesa 3 and the other, specialized in Fashion, located in via Pietrasanta 14. Each library offers supporting material useful for teaching, learning and researching (books, newspapers, magazines, audiovisuals), available for consulting and borrowing, according to the procedures.
Photographic studios for the course in Photography have been placed in a place of more than 400sqm, splitted in three main areas: one dedicated to Still Life, one to Portrait/Fashion and one mixed.
The studio has room for 14 sets, each provided with a Full Frame Canon reflex, professional lenses, Apple computers with updated Adobe software, professional flashes, numerous lighting accessories for the illumination and the preparation of sets.
The studio can be used by the students of the course in Photography in extra-class time, gives the opportunity to freely borrow the equipment for taking pictures opendoor, even during weekends.
The activities in the IT Labs allow the acquisition, both theoretical and practical, of the notions necessary to the completion of the course of the studies. The IT Labs are equipped with OSX and Windows computers, videoprojectors, printers, scanners and graphic pens. Furthermore, they have all the softwares necessary to develop projects and prepare exams. Common spaces located inside the schools have Wi-fi connection.
