Coinciding with the 4th International Crafts Audiovisual Exhibition, IED presented the collaborative film Change to live, directed by Jordi Cussó

New Crafts_Digital Revolution, a project by IED Barcelona and Artesania Catalunya, has once again put the latest technologies in digital manufacturing at the service of crafts thanks to design thinking. The collaboration between students of the school and master craftsmen and women has resulted in the creation of various products: leather shoes with interchangeable soles created through 3D printing, jewellery inspired by icons of contemporary Italian design, knife sharpeners with interchangeable handles, and a chessboard made of blown glass with the traditional iconography of Turkish carpets, among others.

Trinidad Contreras (ceramics), Ferran Collado (glass), Rosa Cortiella (ceramics), Francesca Piñol (textiles), Florentine Kitchen Knifes (knives) and Patricia Cancelo (blacksmith) are the master artisans who, over the course of eight weeks, collaborated with the third-year Product Design students in this edition. During the development of the projects, they also counted on collaboration and technical support from the Ateneu de Fabricació Digital [Fab Lab] in Gràcia.

From the workshop to the screen

The collaboration between IED Barcelona and Artesania Catalunya culminated during the Catalan Craft Week where, coinciding with the 4th International Crafts Audiovisual Exhibition, IED presented the collaborative film Change to live, directed by Jordi Cussó, a teacher at IED. The audiovisual, which could be viewed on the Filmin platform last autumn, reflects the process that humanity has gone through in relation to crafts and how technology has entered the scene to play a strategic role. The images combine recordings of the students themselves in the artisans’ workshops, their creative processes and the final result, by way of a poetic and inspiring perspective.
