Vi Vo_ Villa Voices
27-28 June 2013 • Florence Dance Center • Borgo della Stella 23/r, 50124, Florence, Italy
Istituto Europeo di Design in Florence presents “Vi.Vo: Villa Voices” at the Florence Dance Center, an interactive sound installation curated by this year’s students of Master in Arts Management. The installation proposes a blind sound maze as a metaphor for conversation as a continuous search of meaning, through the voices of Villa Romana’s artists-in-residence. This event, made possible by Etoile Toy Visual Arts Florence, will take place at the Florence Dance Center Via Borgo della Stella 23/r – Florence on the 27th-28th of June, 2013.
This year’s collaboration with Villa Romana and Etoile Toy Visual Arts Florence brings together the voices of Berlin-based Canadian artist Shannon Bool; Irish artist and musician Mariechen Danz; Brussels-based German artist Heide Hinrichs; German conceptual artist Daniel Maier-Reimer and British artist, William Furlong whose project Audio Arts produced a significant archive of artist interviews from 1973 to 2006. Vi.Vo: Villa Voices takes inspiration from Mr. Furlong’s extensive body of work and will be shown in conjunction with his exhibition Speaking to Others: Who Speaks to Who to be held at Villa Romana.
Vi.Vo: Villa Voices uses the maze to emphasize the construction of conversation as a creative process. This is achieved by transforming the rooms at the Florence Dance Center into a dark space and by hanging parabolic speakers from the ceiling. The visitor’s action of walking into a predetermined area will activate the motion sensors which will then enable the speakers mounted above to emit messages. A number of these speakers are placed throughout the space, each with their own dialogues.
The absence of light and visual cues persuades the visitor to construct a route using primarily these messages. He participates in a game of connect the dots which allows him to either follow the conversation or create his own meaning by stepping into different sounds in a new order. As with conversations, often the participants engage in an exchange of signals that are not necessarily linear and sometimes non-verbal. A gesture for example may evoke a meaning that is understood without the need for words. In this installation, the use of motion to activate the transmission of a message emphasizes this concept.
The conversation itself also becomes sculptural, in a way that a speaker can select his words, languages or gestures while the receiver can choose which message to accept. This process of editing gives the dialogue a shape, a volume in a defined space.
As a foundation for creating the route of the maze, the students used the word “AUM”, a primordial sound which is common to all humans, or according to Hindu philosophy, a sound which contains all other sounds and words. “AUM” could be further broken down to 3 basic syllables: “Ah” “Ooh” “Mm” with each syllable embodying individual characteristics, origin and tone but which, when put together, create a certain harmony: “om”.
With this in mind, the maze is transformed into an allegory for the pursuit of unification or agreement, where each of the artists who participate in this exchange — who has traits, experiences and opinions unique to himself — plays a role in forming a conversation that is meaningful and whole.
Vi.Vo: Villa Voices explores the idea of removing the visual and turning to the richness of language and sound to translate the artist’s art and the process of its creation. The international students of IED Masters in Arts Management hailing from 8 different countries: Belarus, Colombia, Italy, Kazakhstan, Taiwan, The Philippines, Portugal, Turkey and Romania were introduced to Villa Romana’s artists-in-residence in March and have since collected meaningful conversations surrounding the artists’ practice, processes and reflections. These conversations which guide the visitors through the maze transform the installation into a construction of shared interactions, of the understanding of each artist as individuals, of their language and sounds.
Such practice was inspired by Mr. Furlong and Barry Barker’s project Audio Arts which started in 1973 and produced 25 volumes of artist interviews including conversations with Andy Warhol, Joseph Bueys, Yoko Ono and the late Italian artist Mariano Merz. Audio Arts was purchased by Tate in 2004 and a selection of this archive will be exhibited at the Villa Romana from the 26th of June.
IED Firenze is honored to have Mr. Furlong as a guest at the Vi.Vo: Villa Voices opening, to be held on 27 June 2013, 7:30pm.

TALENT AND KNOWLEDGE CO-OPERATION EVENT
OMA and IED will be introducing their new collaboration at “Artigianato e Palazzo”, an annual event that takes place in Giardino Corsini in Florence from the 16th of May to the 19th. A Cocktail Party and an evocative installation will celebrate “Talent and Knowledge Cooperation” on the 18th May from 7,30pm.
During the exhibition dedicated to the excellence in Tuscan artisanal techniques and antique crafts, IED and OMA will present “Talent and Knowledge Co-operation”: the innovative project that involved IED students working with the new upcoming artisans from OmAVentiquaranta association.
The event designed by IED students will be promoting the work of young artisans in Tuscany and handcraft tradition. The artisans represent the typical example of today’s Made in Italy concept, that maintain their philosophy on making unique and one of a kind products; while IED students propose and research a creative and contemporary way of communicating.
One of the main projects that IED Students managed was focused on an in depth analysis on the OMA’s Master Artisan, Irma Schwegler, the designer of Old Fashion Sartoria, creating a showcase for this event. Casentino, the typical Tuscan wool used by Irma Schwegler, will be reinterpreted through handmade chandeliers and mannequins to evoke the atmosphere of the countryside thanks to an irreverent mix of images, colours and fabrics.
Video interviews of the young artisans of OmAVentiquaranta created by IED students will represent the feeling of contemporary craftsmanship emerged thanks to this innovative collaboration.
Through touch, smell, sound and image it will be possible to experience the combination of traditional andinnovative way of creativity

“Creative diary”- IED international network grant scholarships in Italy, Spain and Brazil
Daily showcase of world young creatives who compete to win 38 IED international scholarships for its undergraduate courses for the 2013-2014 school year for studies in Milan, Rome, Turin, Cagliari, Venice, Florence ,Como, Madrid, Barcelona and São Paulo.
This competition is open to young international students. IED rewards to the creative talents of young people aged between 18 and 28 years with an undergraduate course in its schools of Design, Fashion, Visual Communication and Management.
IED calls young creatives to develop ideas and projects inspired by ‘Design for Another Point of View’: show your ideas, concepts and talent expressing Another Point of View in Fashion, Design, Visual Communication and Management. Nowadays, being creative can have a lot of meanings. It means being curious, adventurous, sensitive, independent, inventing new things, but above all it means seeing things that others do not. In most cases, it is not about creating something completely new, but finding innovative solutions, describing things from a new perspective, from Another Point of View. This is related to your personal opinions, to anything you dream about and you believe can make this world better. Your Point of View can reveal your energy, your ideas about the purpose of an object, about sustainability, eco-design, about anything related to the Fashion and Design world. With your design, contribution and your Point of View you can even “change” the world!
The projects and images selected will be published on the site www.creativediary.net and can receive ratings, comments and still be sponsored by internet users through their facebook newsfeed.
Entries may be sent by e-mail. A jury of experts will award scholarships to best works. The deadline for submitting projects is the 16th April 2013, 23.59 (Italian time).

Admissions Open for the Masters of Design and Innovation 2012
The IED Madrid school of design has opened admissions for the Masters of Design and Innovation 2012.
These four Master’s programs, conceived as research laboratories, prepare professionals to overcome the challenges of a global, interconnected market through the perspective of “New Visions, New Leaders.”
Directed by major figures in the industry, these Masters are the most advanced level of training offered at the IED Madrid in the areas of design, communications, concepts and strategies:
- Master of European Design Labs
- Master of Strategic Design Labs
- Master of Communication Design Labs
- Master of Product Design Labs
In a scenario such as the present day, “changing, full of uncertainties, but also full of opportunities, new values are discernible that, inevitably, are going to be at the forefront of all activities carried out in the new social context. Among these, I would like to highlight innovation as an overall value and a new way of doing, relating, and focusing on problems and their solutions, which we could call transversal knowledge,” commented Carlos Barrabés, Director of the Master of Strategic Design Labs. In this sense, the Masters of Design and Innovation establish an ideal framework for reinforcing divergent thinking and transversal skills in our students, as well as analyzing present-day design from different perspectives.
In order to achieve these established objectives, the classes are bilingual (English-Spanish) and the academics are far from traditional methods: a major component involves international trips and visits to design studios, fairs, educational institutions, museums, companies and research centers, workshops, exclusive conferences, cultural and technical seminars, classes and tutorials with major figures and thinkers in the world of design and innovation; as well as collaborations with leading companies and a productive interaction among students from the four academic programs (students come from a variety of different countries).
Contact with different cultures, landscapes, customs and lifestyles is essential for students to develop their full potential and reinforce divergent thinking, far from the norm – innovative and extraordinary. Definitively, this is a unique personal experience and a decisive investment in your professional future.

IED presents TEDxIED – Creativity is a profession
On 20 September, IED Milan is presenting TEDxIED: the first TEDx ever to be organised by a school in Italy will be entitled “Creativity is a profession”. Keeping faith with the philosophy, method and objectives of training at the IED, TEDxIED has given itself the remit to explain how creativity is in every way a profession, one of strategic value for getting the economy moving again.
TED (Technology Entertainment Design) is a non-profit organisation established 26 years ago in California with the format of a four-day conference whose aim is to disseminate ideas worth spreading with the potential for changing attitudes, life and, ultimately, the world. Since then, the TED conference has provided a platform every year for the world’s leading thinkers and doers, who are challenged to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes or less. These contents are made available free of charge on the website www.ted.com and shared with the public. Past TED speakers have included such famous figures as Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Philippe Starck and Isabel Allende, as well as thousands of others.
In 2009, the founders decided to issue local licences for organising independent events: the result is TEDx, a programme of conferences designed to offer communities, organisations and individuals the chance to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level, offering the public a brilliant blend of live speakers and video TEDTalks.
“Embracing the TED mission – ideas worth spreading – to the full, we are convinced that the IED, as a training and research establishment, is not only a key venue where valuable ideas and contents are born and grow, but above all a strategic channel whose duty it is to disseminate them to contemporary society”, states Emanuele Soldini, director of the Milan IED. “For 46 years, the IED has been training professionals in the creative disciplines of design, fashion, communication and the visual arts: these are professions whose creative nature is enhanced by teaching the culture of design and by the tools and skills that students acquire as they learn and interact with the real working world. Creativity – the ability to generate, develop and give shape to new ideas with the potential for catering for the functional requirements of today’s world – is a value for contemporary society: that is why we believe that it deserves to be recognised as a profession in its own right”.
“In a period of dramatic economic and cultural crisis, creativity provides the vital thrust towards innovation that is more necessary than ever today. Creativity as a driver of productivity is our philosophy”, adds Alessandro Rimassa, director of the IED Research Centre. “That is why this 20 September is a crucial step forward for us: this partnership with TED signals the launch of a form of payback for creatives, who still do not enjoy the esteem they deserve, especially here in Italy”.
The event is open to the public, but places are limited. Registrations open on 28 August on the website www.tedxied.com
TEDxIED will be streamed on IED.tv and on Wired.it.

BAG IN TOWN
EASTPAK is partnering with the Istituto Europeo di Design in the portal www.creativecontexts.com to invite young creatives from all over the world to enter the new Bag in Town – A bag for 24 hours design competition, with designs that are ready to go straight out into the business world as complete products made by EASTPAK.
This innovative international competition explores how bags relate to the urban environment, encouraging ides from the fashion, design and communication scenes. The idea is to give bags a fresh aesthetic and functional definition by asking a simple, straightforward question: “what is the ideal briefcase structure?”.
Everybody who is 18 years of age is eligible to enter for Bag in Town. Since it was launched officially on 17 April, it has been possible to enter by going to the website www.bagintown.net. All you have to do to enter a design is upload it to the portal no later than 1 July 2012. The best six will be chosen for their style and degree of innovative content: three by a jury of experts and the other three by an open vote on the web.
The six designers chosen will get a unique chance to access the IED Creative Factory in Milan. For six intensive days, the finalists will be tutored and assisted by the EASTPAK marketing and product manager and by professionals from the IED network: their aim will be to create a prototype for each design, so literally make their dreams come true.
The prototypes will then also be published on the Bag in Town portal, where the public will be invited to vote for them. The design that gets the most votes will win a prize of €5,000 and have the chance to go on sale in 2013, as part of the new EASTPAK collection.

IED calls young creatives to develop ideas and projects inspired by MY COUNTRY: how can we contribute to global innovation?
The starting point is the student’s country, with its people, language, history, nature, traditions, habits. The students have to propose some new ideas linking between the spirit of their country and innovation, tradition and new ideas, local experiences and global needs: they will have to give innovative suggestions in order to enhance the best characteristics, creations, which can be found in their countries, and to present them to an international audience. Design and Visual Communication will be the main tools to realize that purpose, with different results depending on the program of choice, since a briefing has been defined for each area of studies. Use your imagination!

“Creative diary”- IED international network grant scholarships in Italy and Spain
Daily showcase of world young creatives who compete to win 6 IED international scholarships for its undergraduate courses for the 2012-2013 school year for studies in Rome.
INTERIOR DESIGN, ADVERTISING COMMUNICATION, MEDIA DESIGN, VIDEO DESIGN, FASHION MARKETING AND COMMUNICATION and FASHION DESIGN.
This competition is open to young international students. IED rewards to the creative talents of young people aged between 18 and 28 years with an undergraduate course in its schools of Design, Fashion, Visual Communication and Management.
The projects and images selected will be published on the site www.creativediary.net and can receive ratings, comments and still be sponsored by internet users through their facebook newsfeed.
Entries may be sent by e-mail. A jury of experts will award scholarships to best works. The deadline for submitting projects is the 2nd of May 2012, 23.59 (Italian time).
