Master in Sustainable Architecture at IED Turin starting in April 2012NEWS

Sustainable architecture is framed by the larger discussion of sustainability and the pressing economic and political issues of our world. The idea of sustainability, or ecological design, is to ensure that our actions and decisions today do not inhibit the opportunities of future generations.
Recognizing the importance of this subject, the Istituto Europeo di Design in Turin, Italy, offers a Master in Sustainable Architecture. The course begins in April 2012 and will be held in English. Specifically tailored for graduates in architecture and civil engineering, the aim of the course is to train designers capable of understanding and managing the dynamics behind environmental strategies and transforming the need to address the problem of energy consumption in buildings into a creative opportunity.
A professional who can combine architectural design competence with the technical knowledge required to come up with a sustainable project. Mario Cucinella, an Italian architect who has worked to adapt his designs to climate and sustainability issues, is the coordinator of the IED master.
The course will provide insight into the awareness and culture on which sustainability is based, presenting the different contexts in which it can be applied, retracing the history of the exploitation of renewable resources right up to an overview of current transnational energy policies. “The main target of the course is the use of innovative technologies and professional skill, to embody an ideal of architectural quality integrating environmental sustainability, ethics and a positive social impact”, explains Cucinella, the only Italian architect to win twice the MIPIM Architectural Review Future Projects Awards.
The course has a limited number of openings so don’t don’t waste any more time, request information and book in for an interview.

"Creative diary"- IED grant 38 international network master scholarships in Italy and Spain
Daily showcase of world young creatives who compete to win 38 IED international scholarships for its master courses for the 2011-2012 school year for studies in Milan, Rome, Turin, Cagliari, Venice, Florence, Madrid and Barcelona.
This competition is open to young international students. IED rewards to the creative talents of young people aged between 20 and 45 years with an graduate course in its schools of Design, Fashion, Visual Communication and Management.
IED calls young creatives to develop ideas and projects describing My Reuse Design: please apply the reuse concept to the area of studies that you prefer, Fashion, Design, Visual Communication, Management.
“Reuse” means using an item more than once, for the same function, or for a second life, when it is used for a different purpose. By reusing, we can create new shapes from old materials. Reuse helps save time, money, energy, and resources, it can offer quality products to people and organizations with limited means, it can generate jobs and business activity that contribute to the economy. Reuse is a very important part of a sustainable behavior. Reusing is different from recycling, which consists in processing used materials for the production of new objects.
Reuse can consist of different actions: remanufacturing (reconstruct the object), regiving/regifting (taking a gift and giving it to someone else), repurposing (changing the function of an object), and nearly everything we buy and consume can be reused: old metal cans, clothes, textiles, plastic bags, bicycle tires, packaging tools are just a few examples of objects that can generate creative reuse.

"Creative diary"- IED international network grant scholarships in Italy, Spain and Brazil
Daily showcase of world young creatives who compete to win 36 IED international scholarships for its undergraduate courses for the 2011-2012 school year for studies in Milan, Rome, Turin, Cagliari, Venice, Madrid, Barcelona and São Paulo.
This competition is open to young international students. IED rewards to the creative talents of young people aged between 18 and 28 years with an undergraduate course in its schools of Design, Fashion, Visual Communication and Management.
IED calls young creatives to develop ideas and projects inspired by ‘your creative energy’: everything that you like so much that it pushes you to create, that you feel like your strong creative force, that you always have in front of your eyes when you think about doing something new. It can be related to anything you dream about and you believe can make this world better; it can be linked to the traditional meaning of energy, to the usage of sun, water, wind or any other renewable sources of energy, or to sustainable and eco-design, to recycling and reusing in new productions, to self-production.
It can also represent your main source of inspiration, the metaphorical energy that feeds your creativity, a person, an object, a location, a historical period or a successful singer, a rockband in the history of music, an artist, an actress or actor, a stylist, a designer, a model, a public or historical name. Use your imagination!

IED presents MY OWN SHOW 2011EVENT

On the 24th of February, during the Milanese Fashion Week, a new edition of My Own Show will be performed: once again this international contest, conceived and promoted by Istituto Europeo di Design together with Franca Sozzani, will present the projects of the best new-graduated students of the IED Network.
All capsule collections of our selected fashion designer have been specially produced for My Own Show thanks to prestigious fashion companies such as AEFFE, Falber-Moschillo and Valentino Fashion Group, while all styling projects are supported by Vogue.it. Exceptional partner for this 2011 edition is ALFAPARF GROUP, one of the main Italian equity cosmetics groups in the world.
The womenswear projects presented will be “Still Life” by Adelaide Begalli - IED Milan and “Raiz” by Moises Nieto Narvaez - IED Madrid; for Menswear “Street Smart Skater” by Raphael Vicente Rosa - IED Sao Paulo; “New Homeless” is the line of accessories projected by Heui Kyung Kim - IED Rome. Styling projects are “Delightful Tedium” by Eleonora Giammello - IED Turin and “Clone Imperfetto” by Gaia Fraschini - IED Milan. Special mention of the committee for Gruppo Hoosier – IED Turin, of Giuliano Gregnanin, Luca Palazzo and Serena Civiero who have created a brand following all the aspects of its development.
The presented collections, because of the different features of each project, will be set up in a basic and intentionally “rough” context. The display will lead down a path as the essence of the final project, a quintessence of knowledge and acquired skills: the education dialogue developed throughout years of study and practice is summarized in a tangible representation. The exhibition route will be like a theater transformed into a warehouse, where items improvise. The open space within the new IED premises of Via Bezzecca 5 in Milan, Milanese core of one of the main fashion districts, turns into a “performing stage” for new IED talents.
Now at its fifth edition, My Own Show asserts its international value: Dazed Digital has recently dedicated a wide section to the contest and to the didactic approach of IED Moda Lab, aimed to the training and selection of young talents:http://www.dazeddigital.com/fashion/article/9479/1/my-own-show.
My Own Show on-line
On-line from the 18th of February, www.myownshow.it is a website dedicated to all IED Moda Lab talents involved in My Own Show. The website becomes an interactive platform with blogs, images, videos and interviews, to allow the audience to keep following careers and works of the My Own Show’s winners and young IED Moda Lab designers after the event.

This is the main purpose of Istituto Europeo di Design in fostering theproject IED4SB, IED for Social Business, therefore assuming an active role in promoting theidea, the cause and the projects of Professor Muhammad Yunus, economist and Nobel Prize, becoming a bridge between an advanced Design culture and the world of Social Business.Conceived by Professor Yunus, Social Business is a new kind of business with social aims, without loss and without distribution of dividend, exclusively operating to reach a targetedsocial objective: a world without poverty, whereas the main leverage is humanity andempathy.

All these activities will be collected in one “container”, IED4SB, that will work as a socialbusiness itself and will be open to Institutional and Private partners, yet to Grameen CreativeLab (GCL) – the organization lead by Professor Yunus and Hans Reitz, taking charge of socialbusiness projects – with whom IED signed a partnership today.
The focus of the agreement between GCL and IED is the joint activity IED4Y7Y that will honour7 young diplomats, selected between the best International IED Alumni, to participate tothe Master D4SB and an “on site” Internship aiming to design new real solutions to socialproblems. They will cooperate at GCL social business project at worldwide level in Albania,Colombia, Haiti e Bangladesh.
“With this project we enter the advanced frontier of Social and Sustainable Design, a disciplinejoining together social needs and solutions”, says Carlo Forcolini, IED CEO.
“The essence of Social Business lays in creativity”, says Professor Yunus, “The objective is tocreate very good products and services for the poor people, products and services with theright price and sustainable from an economic and environmental point of view.
This cultural IED project sees also the start of the new “International Advisory Board”, countingInternational personalities of excellent value: the sociologist Prof Derrick de Kerchove, the philosopher Prof Remo Bodei, Business Design Theorist Prof Richard Buchanan, thephilosopher Prof Francisco Jarauta, the economist Prof Muhammad Yunus.
“The ambition is to collect the experiences coming out of the Advisory Board and D4SBconference and then translate those experiences into Academic programs of IED. IED couldturn into the first Italian Design Business school of Tomorrow. “Design for social business willfind here its dedicated space” – commented Carlo Forcolini.

IED Madrid to present MadridDesignNet at the Madrid Pavilion of the World Expo 2010 ShanghaiNEWS

Madrid has become an international benchmark for good practices relating to the global city. MadridDesignNet will be on show at the Madrid Pavilion of the World Expo 2010 Shanghai between 9 and 17 October.
IED Madrid, institutional partner of the Madrid Pavilion at the Expo 2010 Shanghai, is to showcase MadridDesignNet on 11 October, the on-line platform created by young designers from around the world (1,000 students from 17 different cities), all united by the simple goal of innovating and generating creative ideas and proposals on the Spanish capital under the Expo theme of Better City, Better Life.
Thanks to its very structure, the network has effectively become a hub for both culture and the economy, an open meeting point geared towards modernisation and modern times via creativity, while encouraging new models of learning and cross-collaboration among professionals from different disciplines.
Madrid, the only Spanish or Latin American city to have its own pavilion, and the only one to feature two elements, namely the Bamboo House and the Air Tree (both replicas based on buildings already constructed in Madrid), will showcase, as part of its programme of professional and business activities, the 20 best ideas selected from no fewer than 1,000 proposals on how to improve urban life within the city created over months of work at MadridDesignNet. The 20 selected projects are prime examples of innovation at work, and are set to become reference points for work and research on urban transformation and social housing policies, both of which take on crucial importance in highly dynamic countries such as China. Madrid’s involvement in hosting and presenting the MadridDesignNet network confirms the city’s unflinching commitment to the future of design on the international stage.
With this in mind, Madrid’s programme of activities, which will run from 9 to 17 October, will include not only exhibitions at both the Bamboo House and the Air Tree (of which we would highlight a video on the on-line universe shaped from the visions of hundreds of young people, and a system that enables users to find out, in real time, all the open events that a given city is offering), but also workshops intended for Chinese businessmen and businesswomen, and Spanish companies with business concerns in China.
The MadridDesignNet programming will also include the conference Innovation and Technology in Developing the Cities of Tomorrow, which will be held on 13 October at the prestigious Tongji University of Shanghai.
The Madrid Pavilion, which will soon reach the impressive milestone of 4 million visitors, and which has already received more than 300 high-profile visits from prominent figures (academics, businessmen and businesswomen, urban planners, economists and politicians), will remain in Shanghai as a lasting legacy of the Spanish capital following the end of the Expo.
