School of Visual Arts in Venice

IED Visual Arts is the fully self-contained school focusing on image and everything related to its communication. A creative laboratory where students learn about the tools, the codes of lexicon and expression and the new techniques and technologies pertinent to designing, conveying and elaborating images.

In every area of the market, image is today’s main vehicle for conveying values and meanings: it is used to communicate about widely different areas of production, such as fashion, industrial design and advertising, but also culture, politics and topics of social concern. The way that a concept or a project is presented visually is anything but an accessory: it makes a decisive contribution to ensuring that a message is communicated successfully.

To act professionally and expertly in this field calls for an eclectic, cross-cultural background based on extensive knowledge on the one hand of the socio-cultural context where the visual designer is operating and, on the other, of the new information technologies that never cease changing the role played by imaging in communications.

The language of images is a tool for setting trends, creating fashion, doing research and conducting experiments.

IED Visual Arts is devoted to the culture of the image as a focal element of communications and trains professionals to make their way with competence and certainty in the world of the media.

It is a complete training experience that enables students to familiarise and experiment directly with all the techniques and tools of visual communications, both conventional and digital. These courses are tailored for high-school leavers, young graduates and professionals who want to improve their skills.

IED Visual arts school in Venice, Certosa campus

A campus in the middle of the sea, yet only a few hundred metres from one of the world’s liveliest and best known centres of history, art and culture. The city opposite and nature all around: the island of Certosa (Charterhouse) is situated in the centre of the Lagoon, between the city, the Lido and Murano.

On this island, the Vento di Venezia Nautical Hub has launched an economic and cultural rejuvenation programme, in which IED is acting as a full partner, contributing to bring about an original, experimental reinterpretation of Venetian traditions.

The courses available here are based on the syntheses achieved by factoring IED into Venice and its traditions, relating closely to the shipyard industry, glass craftsmanship, the cinema, fashion and art.

So the Certosa campus, which houses all four schools in the system, is an experimental centre that offers Masters and advanced training courses, seminars and workshops to a heterogeneous public: university students, practising professionals, business concerns and, in general, everyone who wants to learn more about certain topics in the cultural sphere.

“The market gardener’s house” is a completely renovated structure that houses the lecture theatres, located in a garden and equipped with a network server and Internet connectivity. The IT workshops and classrooms are located in the nearby “Valeria” building.

The island has a restaurant with an agreement with IED, a yachting harbour with moorings for about 100 vessels and a shipyard. For students who want to discover the experience of campus life with their peers, there are ten double and single rooms available.
