Bachelor of Arts in Product Design (240 ECTS). Taught in Spanish.
This course in Product Design, taught in Spanish, shapes designers capable of developing projects of a social, strategic and technological nature in a wide variety of sectors: furniture, lighting, consumer electronics, packaging, personal accessories, utensils, household appliances, wearables, etc.
Throughout the educational journey, the specialisation teaches students how to contemplate and solve the problems, needs and requirements that have a bearing on the formalisation of the product, as well as how to determine a product’s industrial quality and its appropriate incorporation into the market.
The curriculum includes criteria such as sustainability, energy efficiency and environmental impact, taking into account the social impact of any industrial product. It also explores new realities in terms of financing and production, such as collaborative consumption, crowdfunding, digital manufacturing, rapid prototyping and 3D printing.
The first year of the course focuses on acquiring the basic concepts of product design and its culture and methodology. The students are challenged to analyse and understand their environment, to create and to communicate.
The second year focuses on developing individual creativity and the students start to learn the tools of this speciality, such as mould making, mechanical and digital production systems, sketching, storytelling, Rhino, CAD and communicating through Illustrator, Photoshop and oral communication.
In the third year they start to spend time in companies and develop more complex, technical projects involving prototypes and actual costs. The product design, interior design and transportation design students work together in cross-departmental teams. They also study new materials, such as biomaterials, nanomaterials, materials with zero impact, etc.
In the fourth year they have compulsory internships with a company and select their individual professional directions. Finally, they undertake a course-end final project with real companies, in which they first build prototypes and then, if successful, see them produced and launched onto the market.
The course teaches students to comprehend and anticipate the demands of the market, by negotiating with business intentions and translating them into a properly defined project that can be manufactured. It emphasizes the importance of the concept, in order to predict consumption trends and styles, based on an understanding of the demands of the market and social needs.
The course also gives the students a knowledge of production materials and technology so that they can bring their projects to life. In addition to a theoretical understanding of the project, the students focus on analysing technologies, function, ergonomics and usability.

Istituto Europeo di Design publishes the winners of the scholarship contest for the Master of Design and Innovation Programmes (MDI) at IED Madrid and IED Barcelona.

Gabriele Chiave knows no boundaries. As a lifelong observer of the world around him, Gabriele is driven by the comprehensive nature of design and a desire to ignite meaningful interaction between product and consumer. After Studying industrial design at IED Milano, he has worked in Marc Sadler Studio and the IS European Design Center. These experiences helped Gabriele master the subtle nuances and delightful balance between form and function, industry and art, structure and experimentation. Gabriele exudes this foundation at Marcel Wanders, where he has worked since 2007. Evolving to become Creative Director, he now oversees all projects in product and interior design, and art direction for some of the most renowned international design brands such as Kartell, Poliform, Moooi, Flos, Cappellini and many others.
