The Bachelor of Arts in Jewellery Design at IED Milano offers comprehensive training covering all stages of designing a jewellery collection – from initial research to creative development, prototyping, and product communication.

The teaching approach integrates experimentation with the use of diverse materials and techniques, combining creative thinking with structured design methodology. By placing material and technical experimentation at the heart of the programme, theory and practice merge in a constant dialogue between design, art, and technology, providing tools to interpret the jewellery sector.

Further studies in photography, styling, video, and exhibition design enrich the programme, equipping students with essential skills for enhancing and presenting contemporary jewellery.

Course structure and contents:

The IED programme spans three years, integrating design with cultural knowledge, dialogue with professionals, technical skill development, and the use of innovative tools.

Year One: Introduces the foundations of the discipline, ranging from goldsmithing techniques, hand and digital drawing, material knowledge, and design methodologies. These practical aspects are complemented by theoretical studies in art and jewellery history, perception theory, and semiotics, fostering a critical and holistic approach to design.

Year Two: Dedicated to experimentation and engagement with the professional world. Collaborations with companies and brands enrich projects with complexity. Research focuses on material innovation and the communicative value of jewellery in relation to the body. Students work individually and in groups, developing advanced skills such as 3D modelling and exploring cultural themes linked to fashion, design, and society.

Year Three: Focused on innovation and the definition of each student’s creative identity. Projects address contemporary themes, opening up to influences from fields beyond traditional jewellery. Cultural training expands with studies in contemporary art, fashion, and architecture.

The programme concludes with the thesis project: a structured collection composed of unique pieces and edition pieces, accompanied by a visual communication project including photography, styling, video, and exhibition presentation. Developed with the support of external tutors, the thesis simulates real professional practice and consolidates technical, creative, and organisational skills.
