Transportation Design today goes beyond shaping vehicles, operating on a broader scale to define visions, behaviors, and scenarios of contemporary mobility.
Designing in this field means engaging with complex ecosystems in which vehicles, spaces, interactions, and services are increasingly interconnected. The evolution of electric technologies, new interior configurations, advanced digital interfaces, and emerging autonomous driving scenarios are reshaping the relationship between people, movement, and the built environment. These transformations call for design approaches capable of balancing aesthetic, functional, and cultural requirements.
Within this context, the Master in Transportation Design at IED Torino prepares high-level designers ready to enter the international automotive design studios with a creative, technical, and strategic mindset. Unique on a global scale, the program offers an immersive educational experience that approaches design as a complex process, where personal vision and product knowledge guide the development of coherent, feasible, and industry-ready solutions.
Through an intensive and specialized program, students are guided through the complete development of an automotive project, from concept generation to exterior and interior design, including materials, colors, and finishes (CMF) and the design of digital interfaces.
The first year focuses on building core theoretical knowledge and fundamental tools, with an emphasis on hand and digital sketching and vehicle architecture, alongside professional use of 3D modeling software. The second year explores all phases of the design process through a design-centered approach, integrating UI and UX, and introducing advanced real-time visualization tools, with a specific focus on the development of a strong professional portfolio.
For the final thesis project, students—working individually and in teams—develop a concept car in collaboration with a company, presented through digital drawings, renderings, videos, and a full-scale 1:1 prototype. Each project becomes part of a growing collection that reflects a long-standing collaboration between IED and leading international automotive brands, offering students direct engagement with the industry as well as opportunities for research and advanced experimentation within professional design practices.
Turin provides the ideal setting for this program. A city that has played a central role in the history of automotive design; it hosts a unique and highly developed ecosystem of design studios, companies, engineering firms, and industrial partners. IED enables students to connect directly with this environment and with a broad network of professionals who share their expertise through lectures, workshops, and conferences, creating valuable opportunities for professional growth and career placement.
The Master welcomes students from all over the world and from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds who aim to develop an innovative, open, and highly technology-driven mindset to anticipate and reshape future mobility scenarios. Graduates pursue careers as Car Exterior Designer, Car Interior Designer, 3D Modeler, CMF Designer, and Interface Designer, as well as roles within design centers, R&D departments, and companies operating across the evolving mobility sector.

"One of the best thing that ever happened to me is when I landed in Torino nearly 20 years ago and I made really good friendship there. The city itself is very influential for the people who are interested in cars because the car culture in Turin is like the everyday thing."
