Stay ahead of future mobility trends and work with leading automotive brands in the iconic city of car design. This is what our three-year Transportation Design Undergraduate Programme at IED Torino is all about
The three-year Transportation Design Undergraduate Programme at IED Torino will help you fulfil and broaden your vision. Over three years, you will shape your passion for the automotive world, building solid and consistent groundwork for making your dreams come true with your own sketches and drawings.
This training will open up a new world to you, the world of the automotive industry. You will learn everything about aesthetic and practical details, going through the whole creative process behind the creation of each project. You will live a great learning experience in Turin, the Italian capital of car design and a global reference mark for the industry.
With real-life projects and assignments, you will challenge yourself and develop your own project design approach like a true designer. As you work on projects developed from real briefs, you will gradually acquire more of your own self-reliance, learning how to approach project design with open mindset and motivation to take on new challenges in an ever-changing market where transportation design is driven by constant technological innovation.
Experiencing the multiple perspectives of automotive with hands-on projects and meaningful cooperation opportunities
The three-year Transportation Design Undergraduate Programme at IED Torino combines theory with practical applications using critical, cross-disciplinary methods where design works as a tool to bring forward the future of mobility.
Right from the start, you will gradually become familiar with your target industry and develop a design thinking approach applied to car design. You will gradually be introduced to technical and practical subjects, developing knowledge of software tools and practical skills that you will be able to use for projects of growing importance. We will help you develop self-confidence and a growing awareness of the tools and resources available. You will also gain insights into materials, aerodynamics, styling and ergonomics.
You will have the opportunity to work on specific training activities in cooperation with leading national and international companies, not just in the automotive industry, but also in such areas as interaction design, motorcycle design, design or yacht design. The highlight of your training experience will be your dissertation project. You will have the opportunity to show everybody that you can work independently and use your skills across every step of your projects.
The three-year Undergraduate Programme in Transportation Design at IED Torino is for all those who want to turn their passion for cars into a career. But most importantly, it is for anyone looking to move into a future with work opportunities as Exterior Car Designer, Interior Car Designer, Automotive Interaction Designer, Motorcycle Designer, Yacht Designer, Mobility System Designer, Colour and Trim.
You do not need any specific requirements to access this programme, as it is open to anyone with a high school diploma, with dreams of creating the Lamborghini or Ferrari of the future. You could be the new designer who will rethink the mobility of the next 30 years, taking on all the multiple and exciting challenges involved in this industry.
Over the three years, you will find out how the Transportation Designer is actually a constantly evolving professional playing a key role in the growth of urban environments and communities. Constant research and insight into society are what this career is all about -and this is actually what you are going to do in your future.
The three-year Transportation Design degree programme has a very strong connection with the city of Turin, a key location for Italy's most prominent car makers and a world symbol of car design. It is here that iconic names such as Pininfarina, Bertone, Giugiaro and his Italdesign have brought their best interpretations of Made in Italy style, elevating it to the top of the automotive industry.
Even now, Turin continues to set the standard. The style centres of Jeep, Lamborghini, Suzuki along with some of the longer-standing ones such as Pininfarina or Alfa Romeo are based here. And the city is also home to the most important project design studios supporting the industry with its whole supply chain.
This programme will give you the opportunity to live a unique experience through partnerships, meetings and workshops connected with Transportation Design, working closely with internationally renowned brands. You will be able to experience real-life projects contracted by leading automotive brands, with the help of a team of lecturers who are all specialists from the industry and work with such brands as Lamborghini, Alfa Romeo, Suzuki, Tata, Maserati, Jeep, Pininfarina and Italdesign.
You will be able to expand your work portfolio, a tool that is so important in the professional design world of today. Upon completion of your training, you will also have the experience needed to quickly move into a brand style centre or an independent automotive design studio. With an eye on market demands and trends, this programme will bring you into the forefront of upcoming transformations as you will be able to rewrite mobility paradigms and scenarios using your own futuristic visions.
On your first year, basic theory (history and culture of mobility and technological innovations, ergonomics and aerodynamics) will be combined with learning about creativity, project design and experimentation. You will begin to bring your design thinking skills into action as you undertake your first projects working with our partner companies.
