IED Alumni: Juan Pablo Bernal Hoyo

Bernardo started studying Fashion and Textile Design in Mexico City, but he always dreamt of an exchange experience in a major fashion city, and that’s when he found IED Milano.

Right after the Undergraduate course in Fashion Design he started interviewing for many brands and ended up getting interviewed for Bottega Veneta, where he stayed 8 months as an intern in the Headquarters of Milan, and the he got hired. After that experience, he received a really good offer from the French brand J. Mendel, where he had worked for 2 collections, and which helped him becoming a Senior Designer.

The first advice I would give to IED students is to focus on the business side of the program and not just the design part, and also to learn as much as possible the technical subjects, like pattern making or draping: these subjects have more job opportunities that are really well paid, while the design side has fewer options. I learned a lot from working with the other students, including those who were not studying fashion”.

Currently Bernal is working as a freelance for different projects form graphic design to fashion, jewelry, accessories and of course prints. He launched his website and some of his works can be seen at these links:
