IED at Seoul Design Festival

From December 4th to 8th, 2019 IED will join the 18th edition of the most iconic design event in Korea.

The Seoul Design Festival’s theme this year is “Seoul.” Seoul, the capital city of Korea—and a megacity with a population of more than 10 million people—is considered by many to be one of the world’s hippest cities. The Seoul Design Festival will focus on the fact that new and creative energies are being brought about as creators make new and creative platforms based on Seoul’s diverse network, rich cultural contents, and strong local characteristics.

On December 5th, at 4,00pm Arch. Riccardo Balbo – IED Dean – will run the conference Design-driven innovation and urban eco-systems.

The role of design is overarching new areas, outside the boundaries of the discipline comfort zone: in the global discussion on global sustainability (SDGs), design and designers take the role of facilitators rather than solvers: design language becomes an arbiter among different systems of knowledge, able to decode the SDGs into the language of products, services, processes and business models in order to trigger real cultural change. This conference aims to discuss new possible scenarios of design engagement in sustainability and reflects on the structure and the development of academic curricula aiming to deal with SDGs, where design disciplines must be considered necessary and fundamental yet not sufficient.
