Learn how to work through all the steps of a project and make videos that communicate your personal insights. This is all possible with our degree programme in Video Design at IED Milano

The Video Design degree programme at IED Milano will inspire your curiosity to understand the world around you. You will increase your knowledge as you study the video productions by the great masters and develop your skills and a personal storytelling approach using motion graphics. You will engage with passion in a multi-faceted job, experiencing and pursuing your own form of expression.  You will go through a challenging experience with your passion and enthusiasm. And after the screening is over, you will feel great pleasure in having people recognize you as part of the final result.

As early as the first year of your training in Video Design, you will learn how to connect with the film-making world: you will write a script, render it into images, shoot video footage, and then assemble it all.

You will explore different genres such as: fiction, advertising, documentaries, video clips, video art, interactive video installations, and video mapping.

After the course, a First Level Academic Diploma is issued. It is recognised by MUR - Italian Ministry of University and Research - and has the same legal value of a Bachelor’s Degree.

Information to decide

A programme with an ever-evolving focus to explore new languages and technologies

The aim of the Video Design degree programme is to walk you through developing technical, practical, analytical and content skills to be able to deal with the multiple languages of video making.

You will be able to put into play all the skills acquired while working on real-life projects with companies, public institutions and non-profit organizations. You will work on artistic experimentation, with a special focus on directing techniques, photography, filming, editing, and, more broadly, on processing and production methods.

Using the labs you will develop specialist skills in creating the narrative schemes of a subject. You will also become familiar with such techniques as image editing, directing and screenwriting, and also visual aesthetic framing research.

The three-year training in Video Design is divided into six terms. Step by step, you will feel more aware and confident about your skills in designing audiovisual products of your own.

The three-year Undergraduate Programme in Video Design at IED Milano is designed for all those who can see their creativity spurred by the world around them. It is for those who open themselves to the world with curiosity, looking at visual forms of video production -e.g. fiction, advertising, documentaries, video clips, video art, interactive video installations and video mapping- as a way to tell the story of the world from a personal perspective.

You do not need any specific background knowledge to join this programme. You just need to be curious to explore every corner of video design, from building cultural background all the way to developing technical skills and using video-making software tools.

Upon completion of your training in Video Design, you will have developed a personal style and identity, as a result of sharing ideas and working closely with students from other programmes. You will also be able to find your way towards the styles and expressions that best work with your own personality.

The Video Design degree programme in Milan provides state-of-the-art equipment available for students at all times as well as two large video shooting rooms located next to each other, one of them with a large cyc wall on three sides equipped with a light set on truss. A loan service is also provided to offer students the opportunity to work independently while outside. A special editing room is also available.

Our lecturers are all skilled and experienced professionals from the industry. They will walk you through a process where you will get solid training and acquire full technical, practical, analytical and content-related skills on the use of new technologies.

We like to describe this programme as a personal development path, where technical skills are merged with critical thinking about the world around us. On your training, you will acquire knowledge that is not restricted to software tools or programmes. Most importantly, you will learn how to develop your project design thinking and tell your story in a personal and original way through your own work.

The methods learned will help you go smoothly through the different areas of production, in particular directing typical audiovisual products of linear storytelling and producing interactive and performance videos.

In our world today, video communication is making its way through all kinds of media. You will then learn a skill that is in high demand and has multiple applications across different areas: Video maker covering corporate videos for public institutions and large corporations; theme songs and commercials for television networks and web videos; videos for corporate events and conferences; graphic formats for TV programmes; concept art films; VJing, interactive installations, museum tours and fittings; film making for the production of shorts, medium-length and feature films; videos for entertainment, theatre and fashion shows.
