IED Barcelona has hosted the European Business Baccalaureate Diploma (EBBD) conference, which brings together the directors of European schools and universities in the fields of business marketing and economics.

Over the course of two days, the event fostered the sharing of ideas on dual-degree study programmes in English, and presented analyses by a range of speakers from the domains of education, the economy, and the promotion of youth employability, among others.

The conference kicked off with opening words from Patrizia Carfagna, organiser of this annual event and Director of the Italian Institute of Barcelona, as well as the General Consul of Italy in Barcelona, Emanuele Manzitti. Both highlighted the pertinence of holding the event at IED; an education institution with a European dimension and a commitment to innovation.

The welcome session also included speeches from the CEO of IED Spain, Alessandro Manetti, and the Director of IED Barcelona, Andrea Marchesi

Manetti focused part of his speech on the role of design. In this sense, he alluded to the historical evolution of the discipline, from its origins focused on production to the human-centred design experienced during the first two decades of the 21st century. He also highlighted the emergence of a new era, that of global challenges, in which design must actively participate in issues such as sustainable development, cultural diversity, social impact and technological development.

Marchesi’s address emphasised the parallels between the mission and vision of the EBBD and IED Barcelona, which constituted its Management Area over a decade ago, and provides programmes such as the BA (Hons) in Business Design and Master in Design Management.
