IED presents biomaterials applications at WantedDesign 2023

In an ever-changing contemporary world, IED is always trying to find the connections between education and the major issues of today's society. Respect for traditional materials, experimentation with new ones, the relationship with technology and multiple applications are at the heart of many of our student's projects.
IED presents in the new edition of WantedDesign a selection of projects that focus on biomaterials and its possible applications.
Our participation consisted ii the Online International Schools Show, and the presential event in Manhattan during ICFF, New York City.
ICFF WantedDesign Manhattan 2023
During the ICFF WantedDesign Manhattan 2023 IED presented Sêlo by Inés Balbás at the Schools exhibit, featuring students work from international design schools.
Sêlo is a lamp collection made with eggshells ideated during her final thesis project in IED Madrid while she was studying Product Design. The project received an IF Talent Award in the Responsible Consumption + Production category in 2021.
Moreover, with the support of IED, Matteo Congiu, a former IED Cagliari’s product design student, also presented "Collection of Love", a collection made with cork in the Launch Pad, an area dedicated to emergent designers.
WantedDesign Online International Schools Show
Sustainability has always been part of IED values, not only in terms of materials (biomaterials), techniques (upcycling), or processes but also as a system: from the ideas to the final life of a product creating new opportunities.
The selection of projects for the online exhibition comes from different design fields and proposes innovative solutions mixing new and traditional materials and techniques. Students have experimented with materials that are -apparently- far away from their final utility. Kombucha, corn, milk, or eggshells are some of the raw materials used to create new lamps, new objects, or fashion garments.
Color Kartel by Flavia Carneade wins the Conscious Design Award
In the context of the Online International Schools Show, the Product Design graduate from IED Madrid, received a Conscious Design Award in the category of Sustainable Solution for its project Color Kartel.
Her project proposes an eco-friendly markers collection made from colored scented organic wax and natural pigments. The markers allow users to write with the container itself and give it a second life transforming the cartridge into a candle.
The jury was conducted by Avinash Rajagopal, editor-in-chief of Metropolis Magazine, and included Jaye Buchbinder, Third Generation at Emeco; Matilda McQuaid, Acting Director of Curatorial for Cooper Hewitt Museum; Todd Bracher, founder of Studio Bracher, as well as Claire Pijoulat and Odile Hainaut, co-founders of WantedDesign.
