For the fifth year in a row, the Istituto Europeo di Design confirms its partnership with Progold, with students from the third year of the Undergraduate Programme in Jewellery Design being involved in the 5th Progold Design Contest, the international competition promoted by the Vicenza-based manufacturer pioneering 3D printing in precious metals.

Competing with students from the jewellery schools of Kostroma State University and Escuela Joyeria de Córdoba, the young designers from IED Torino were challenged to design a precious moving mesh texture to be made using the Service SLM (Selective Laser Melting) technique. Under the mentorship of supervisor Daniela Bulgarelli and lecturer Gabriele Orsi, each of the nineteen students was required to design a metal mesh. They had to develop a 3D digital model essential to the laser fusion of layers of powder, which is typical of this technique and makes it possible to create seamless, lightweight and shape-free pieces of jewellery in gold, platinum and titanium.

IED students again this year won both first prizes in this contest.

With Reptile, a model inspired by the sinuosity of snakes that features an arrow pattern both as a decorative and functional element to enhance the jewel's swing with a one-way swivel, Jacopo Melis succeeded in impressing the Progold Technical Jury and won the Progold Design Best Award 2021, as well as a cash reward and the project's gold prototype.

The online vote, however, has Clara Massari as the frontrunner: with her metal knitting Mesh, a playful interpretation of irregular shapes that can be composed and reassembled without any sealing, she wins the Audience Best Design Award 2021, along with the titanium prototype of her project.
