Carolina Galeazzi, alumnus del IED Barcelona, Mención al Diseño Joven del Premio Cataluña de Ecodiseño 2023

Date

03 October 2023

The prize recognises the practices carried out by students or recent graduates who incorporate considerations into the design of their products to improve their environmental performance throughout their life cycle

The “Ex•Tĕrra project by Carolina Galeazzi, former student of the Master in Sustainable Design and Social Impact at IED Barcelona, continues to accumulate accolades. After winning a prize at the Foodture Sustainable Innovation Awards in 2022, she has now just received a Mention for Young Design at the Catalonia Ecodesign Award 2023.

The prize, presented by the Catalan Office for Climate Change, promotes and recognises the practices and initiatives carried out by students or recent graduates who incorporate considerations into the design of their products to improve their environmental performance throughout their life cycle.

“Ex•Tĕrra” is a bio-based material made from artichoke leaves and stems, non-edible parts of the plant that are discarded and treated as agricultural waste, although they can be used in the artisanal production of paper and ink. Through a process of cooking the leaves with sodium carbonate, the cellulose is separated to make paper and the soluble lignin for ink. The result is a biodegradable, compostable and recyclable material that has been tested in various applications to demonstrate its functionality.

Autumn at DHUB

All the finalist projects for the Catalonia Ecodesign Award 2023 are included in a travelling exhibition that is on display at the Disseny Hub Barcelona until 12 November.

The projects also include “Santa Carxofa” by IED student Justine Oriana Vargas Parra, a craft beer made from artichokes grown in El Prat del Llobregat in order to reappraise and promote the natural resources and cultural heritage of this region.

Galeazzi will also be one of the speakers at a new ADI Making of… Ecodesign session as part of Barcelona Design Week. The session will be held at DHUB on 19 October at 4 pm.

Congratulations to both of you!
