Casa IED opens in New York: a new space for design culture and creative exchange

In Williamsburg, the creative heart of New York, Casa IED has opened as the first of the spaces that IED will dedicate to cultural exchange and collaborative design.
The IED Group has inaugurated Casa IED in New York, the first of a series of spaces that the European Institute of Design will dedicate to cultural exchange and the creation of synergies between designers and the local area.
The initiative was launched in partnership with Salotto, a creative hub founded by IED Alumni and professionals from the city’s design scene, located at 84 Withers Street.
Casa IED is conceived as a place for coexistence, dialogue and shared creativity – a space where design culture is expressed through an international and multidisciplinary community. It represents a new model of knowledge restitution to society and forms part of IED’s broader network of relationships with cities and local communities.
The collaboration with Salotto – a collective of fourteen Italian designers based in New York – strengthens the connection between IED and the new generation of creatives. Among its founders are IED Alumni Gabriel Zangari, design executive and leader of the first IED Alumni Chapter, and Emiliano Ponzi, illustrator and visual artist.
Casa IED launched its public programme with a talk on plural intelligence, featuring Riccardo Balbo, Academic Director of IED Group, and Nicolas Heller, filmmaker and documentarian known as @newyorknico, celebrated for his authentic storytelling and ability to capture the voices of New York’s diverse communities.
“Casa IED is a new component of the IED network, allowing us to connect with local contexts, enrich our community and share knowledge. It’s a place to nourish ourselves with new voices and intelligences,” said Riccardo Balbo.
With Casa IED, the IED Group – a Benefit Corporation owned by the non-profit Fondazione Francesco Morelli – reinforces its commitment to promoting design as a driver of social and cultural growth.
