Sustainable Development and social responsibility in education

Sustainable Development, as defined by the United Nations World Commission on Environment and Development, “meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. From this perspective, the concept of sustainability extends beyond that of an environmentally responsible economy to encompass all aspects of life, providing the foundation for a shared system of values aimed at building a better society and a better world.

Designing for the contemporary world is intrinsically linked to sustainable development and contributes to innovation within the complex social, economic and environmental systems of our time.

Designing for a sustainable future, therefore, is far more than a compelling statement: it is the driving force behind innovation.

IED fully embraces this principle, committing to the promotion of sustainability and to taking action towards a more inclusive future through its initiatives and within its sphere of responsibility.

Sustainability as a Design Approach

For IED, design means taking responsibility for the impact that every decision may have on people, communities and the environment. For this reason, sustainability is integrated into education not only as a thematic area but also as a methodological approach that promotes critical thinking, a systemic perspective and interdisciplinary collaboration. Students are encouraged to engage with the major social and environmental challenges of today, experimenting with design models oriented towards circularity, resource regeneration, inclusion and the creation of shared value. The objective is to educate professionals capable of driving positive transformation, with a clear understanding of the interconnections between natural, cultural, social and economic systems.

Social Responsibility through Education

ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) principles run throughout IED’s educational offer and are applied across different disciplinary areas through projects, research activities and collaborations with the professional world. The IED educational model integrates teaching, research, artistic production and Third Mission activities, fostering continuous dialogue with companies, institutions, organisations and communities. This approach generates a reciprocal exchange of knowledge, expertise and perspectives: on the one hand, it enriches students’ educational experience; on the other, it contributes to the development of ideas, solutions and projects capable of creating value for local communities and territories. In this sense, the projects developed throughout the educational journey are not merely academic exercises, but concrete opportunities to engage with real-world challenges and to generate social, cultural and economic impact.
