At Videocittà Watercult 2026, IED Rome presents an Immersive Installation reawakening the dialogue between Humans and Water
From July 10 to 12, at Rome’s Gazometro, IED will take part in Videocittà Watercult 2026 with EGERIA, an immersive installation that transforms reflection on the ecological crisis into a physical, participatory, and collective experience. Curated by visual artist Alice Felloni and sound designer Giulio Maresca, together with students from the Interactive Media Design and Sound Design programs, the project is part of the festival dedicated to Vision and Digital Culture, which this year focuses on water as both a vital element and a symbol of today’s major environmental challenges.
The work draws inspiration from the Nymphaeum of Egeria, an ancient sacred site located in the Caffarella Valley, now in a state of gradual neglect. Through video mapping, sound environments, interaction, and live performances, the installation reconstructs its current condition, offering visitors a landscape where nature, memory, and decay coexist. At the same time, the space becomes a living organism, capable of responding to the presence of those who move through it.
Sounds, breaths, and voices activate the immersive environment, continuously altering its balance. The more the audience participates, the more the nymphaeum awakens; when interaction decreases, it slowly returns to a dormant state. This symbolic mechanism invites reflection on the active role of communities in protecting ecosystems and preserving natural heritage.
Through a variety of artistic and design contributions developed by the students, EGERIA presents a collective narrative exploring the relationship between human beings, memory, and water resources. Combining research, experimentation, and new technologies, the project envisions more conscious ways of engaging with the environment, transforming public participation into an act of care and shared responsibility.
