A special event presenting the Sound Design performance theses by the students of IED Milano.
Five projects guide the audience through a journey of sound research, electronic experimentation and intimate, personal perceptual dimensions. Rituality, contemplation and transformation become the common thread of works that use electronic music as a tool for inner exploration and for engaging with the surrounding space.
Through audiovisual performances, interactive installations and experimental live sets, the works presented invite the audience to experience sound not only as something to be listened to, but as physical matter and a space for connection.
Rocco Amati - Apriti Cielo!
Apriti Cielo! is an electronic performance by Rocco Amati for synthesizers, sampler and effects. Developed from academic research into the concepts of airiness, breath and elevation, the work investigates the deep connection between harmonic spectrum and spatial perception. Its aim is to analyse how the three-dimensional placement of mid-high frequencies within an arrangement goes beyond acoustic imaging, taking into account the vertical axis along which frequencies move. By strategically orchestrating these sounds in space, the performance harnesses their powerful psychoacoustic impact to trigger specific emotional responses, such as a sense of openness, sensory excitement and an imagined upward thrust.
Jacopo Bissi - Suspension
Suspension is an immersive audiovisual performance that explores the relationship between solitude, digital hyperconnection and the contemporary need for collective reconnection. The project draws inspiration from rave culture and the concept of “ego dissolution”, understood as the temporary dissolution of individual identity in favour of a shared, all-encompassing perception of sensory experience.
Through a performance journey of approximately twenty minutes, divided into four acts – Ground Zero, Enter the Void, Ego Dissolution and Awakening – the spectator undergoes a progressive perceptual and emotional transformation. The work combines experimental electronic music, immersive sound design, visuals and sound spatialisation to simulate a psychedelic and meditative experience, reflecting on the alienating dynamics of contemporary society.
The performance does not merely narrate an experience, but aims to make the audience live it directly, creating a shared space in which isolation, fear of change and fragmented identity can evolve into a new form of emotional and sensory connection.
Cristian Capponi - 440
440 is a 25-minute industrial live set, structured around two main tracks and a central section based on the algorithmic deconstruction of sound materials.
The concept investigates the translation of ritual syntax into compositional complexity. The magical act is not performed as such, but adopted as a purely theoretical model and source of aesthetic inspiration: the dynamics of occultism become architectural rules for sound design and DSP – Digital Signal Processing. Through the methodical application of cumulative effect chains, ritual is transformed into parameter and algorithm, structuring the composition through precise rules of sound design.
The listening environment will be minimal, designed to encourage acoustic immersion: very little light, almost complete darkness, with only two handmade tapestries serving as the sole visual frame for the listening experience.
Maria Chiara Delli Santi - Rituale funebre - Preghiera della sera
Rituale funebre – Preghiera della sera is an introspective performance by Maria Chiara Delli Santi that stages mourning as a slow, circular and solitary experience. Through sound, silence and the repetition of gesture and voice, the pain of loss is experienced as a cathartic and contemplative path that inhabits us and demands to be crossed. A co-protagonist of the work is the woman, understood as a central figure and mother of the world, who sews and repairs, mediating pain: through the act of sewing, the woman digs into the emotion of mourning, contains it and alchemises it.
The research stems from the desire to draw attention to an invisible yet deeply meaningful dimension, analysing ritual as a cultural device for containment and transformation.
Hamza Soummade - 24.000 Nodi
24.000 Nodi is an interactive installation by Hamza Soummade inspired by Jacques Lacan’s studies on the discovery of the self through the mirror. The work relies on artificial intelligence to generate a real-time sound narrative, with a title that refers to the 24,000 Hz sampling frequency of the system. This acoustic narration is translated into mechanical energy: a vibration that propagates through space and sets in motion all the materials that surround the spectator. Reflection and environment thus move beyond a purely visual dimension, inviting the audience to listen to and physically perceive the movement of their own image through matter and sound.
FREQUENZE 2026 represents an opportunity to discover the visions of a new generation of sound designers, through projects that transform academic research into immersive sound experiences.
