On Monday, May 18, at 2:00 p.m., IED Milano welcomes Armando Milani for a lecture dedicated to the role of visual design as a tool for communication, responsibility and social engagement.
A graphic designer and member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale, Armando Milani was born in Milan in 1940 and studied at the Umanitaria School under Albe Steiner. After early collaborations with Antonio Boggeri and Giulio Confalonieri, he moved to New York, where he joined Massimo Vignelli’s studio and taught at the Cooper Union School between 1983 and 1985.
Throughout his career, divided between Milan, New York and Europe, Milani has developed an internationally recognised body of work based on the power of graphic design to denounce, question and raise awareness of some of the most urgent issues of the contemporary world. His work has received several international awards and includes a major collaboration with the United Nations, which in 2004 distributed his renowned poster featuring the peace dove, together with the Human Design Collection series.
Milani continues to hold courses and seminars at international institutions including Cooper Union and the Art Directors Club in New York, the University of Kansas, Parsons School in Santo Domingo, Mexico University in Acapulco, the University for Foreigners of Perugia, Politecnico di Milano and Istituto Europeo di Design.
The lecture, titled “A Conversation with Armando Milani”, is part of the Giants of Visual Design series and will offer students the opportunity to engage with a master of graphic design whose work combines visual clarity, symbolic strength and civic awareness.
