Same city, new opportunities: IED’s open lessons return to the Open House calendar
IED is once again taking part in Open House Roma, the event dedicated to design and architecture that opens historic buildings, urban spaces, and usually inaccessible locations to the public, inviting citizens and visitors to rediscover the city from new perspectives.
For the occasion, IED presents La città insegna, a series that brings learning beyond the classroom, transforming the streets of Rome into a space for active dialogue between students and faculty. The project interprets the urban fabric as a living laboratory, capable of inspiring critical observation and new readings of the contemporary landscape.
This year’s program features three free public events led by IED faculty members, who will guide participants through tours designed to explore familiar spaces through the lens of design. Taking place across two days, the walks will focus on three key areas of the city: Termini Station, the Ostiense district, and the Tuscolano neighborhood.
May 16, from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM
Walls, Dinosaurs and Great Voids
A tour dedicated to reinterpreting Roma Termini railway station. Led by architects Eliana Saracino and Alessandra Glorialanza from the studio TSPOON, coordinators of the Master’s program in Design for Public Spaces, the tour will explore how public space design evolves over time, redefining relationships, uses, and perceptions of places.
May 23, from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM
Urban Undercurrents: Ostiense Between Nature, Energy and Transformation
Led by architect Alina Aggujaro, this itinerary will cross the most significant places in the Ostiense district, tracing its evolution from an industrial hub to a cultural and creative center. An opportunity to observe processes of urban transformation and the constantly evolving relationship between built space and nature.
May 23, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM
Mamma Roma
A walk through the Tuscolano district led by architect Marco Pietrosanto, lecturer in the Bachelor’s program in Interior Design. The route will pass through the Tuscolano I, II, and III complexes, examining one of the most important post-war public housing projects and highlighting the different design approaches and experiments of architects such as Mario De Renzi, Saverio Muratori, and Adalberto Libera.
La città insegna is part of the Public Program created by IED for its 60th anniversary: a calendar of events built around the theme of Plural Intelligence, aimed at bringing together diverse perspectives and encouraging shared reflection on new ways of thinking, designing, and engaging with the contemporary world.
All open lessons are free of charge, with mandatory registration via Open House Roma
