A occhi chiusi is a collection of inclusive games designed to be played without sight, a research journey into the educational power of the senses and new possibilities for multisensory learning.
A occhi chiusi ("With closed eyes") was developed within the Product Design program at IED Roma as a project dedicated to Design for Children and to sensory experimentation in play and learning. Guided by Designer and lecturer Mauro Del Santo and with contributions from visually impaired Designer and Artist Lucilla D’Antilio, the students designed a series of blindfold-play games meant to stimulate touch, hearing, movement, and perceptual memory.
The project stems from a reflection on current educational models, which tend to prioritize sight over all other senses. In contrast, A occhi chiusi proposes a playful approach that values diverse abilities and includes children with different ways of learning. Each prototype explores a specific sensory dimension: shapes, textures, weights, sounds, spatial relationships and rhythms become tools to expand the experience, foster autonomy, and encourage discovery.
The design process developed through research activities, testing, physical models and sessions with professionals from the educational and museum sectors, including the MUSE - Museo delle Scienze in Trento. The result is a collection of games that merges design experimentation with pedagogical intention, inviting the public to play firsthand, literally “with their eyes closed.”
