A course that will teach you how to make the most of your shop by turning it into a space for active communication

To become a Visual Merchandiser capable of influencing customers’ purchasing decisions and increasing their brand loyalty.

Do you want to become an expert in designing retail outlets and showrooms in an exciting and eye-catching way? Would you like to learn how to create an engaging shopping experience for customers across all sectors? If the answer is yes, Visual Merchandising is the course for you.

The IED curriculum will equip you with the skills needed to effectively display and organise products across various retail spaces, coordinating elements such as accessories, lighting and colours, and incorporating the latest industry trends—covering both styles and materials—into the physical space.

By the end of the course, you will be able to independently apply your design, creative and technical skills to product placement and the creation of shop windows and displays.

Information to decide

Work with local brands and retailers to gain hands-on experience in the field

The course, structured into several modules, aims to develop and consolidate analytical techniques for the presentation, promotion and sale of a wide range of products, within the fashion industry and beyond. Specifically, through a combination of classroom-based lectures and practical sessions in the workshop and on location, participants will be able to explore various topics, some more technical in nature—such as visual perception, semiotics and colour theory—and others more applied, such as window dressing and display techniques. Case studies related to the fashion industry and various retail formats will also be covered.

The course is aimed at:

- All professionals or aspiring professionals in the retail sector, whether they work in high street retail or large-scale distribution;

- Those with a strong passion for fashion but who have not yet had the opportunity to work in this sector;

- Architects and designers who wish to specialise in fashion retail.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office is essential, whilst proficiency in graphic design software such as InDesign or Photoshop is considered an advantage.

Thanks to its highly practical approach, the Visual Merchandising course will enable you to:

- Gain first-hand experience in-store through partnerships with local retail outlets, which involve participants in creating displays within their own retail spaces: you will be given a real-world brief to develop a visual merchandising plan, enabling you to learn how to manage timelines, budgets and product placement;

- Acquire practical skills in optimally managing a display mannequin and study sales techniques applicable across various sectors, from high fashion to accessories, and from mass-market retail products to food items;

- Engage with top-level specialists such as Set Designers, visual communication experts and Lighting Designers. You will be able to hear about their professional experience and benefit from the useful advice they will share in the classroom, equipping you with all the tools needed to embark on a career as a Visual Merchandiser.

Syllabus

The course modules cover an in-depth study of various topics, including: visual culture, the visual design department, and the role of the visual merchandiser in the fashion industry and large-scale retail; different retail formats; lighting design; window dressing and display techniques; materials used to showcase products; case studies; and a final assessment.
