Bringing design beyond the classroom also means connecting it with people, their needs and the places they live in. This is the common thread linking the projects by IED Torino students featured among the protagonists of TRIP 2026 – OLTRE, the festival of contemporary art, design and architecture taking place across Barriera di Milano in Turin on 3 and 4 October.

This is the common thread linking the projects by IED Torino students featured among the protagonists of TRIP 2026 – OLTRE, the festival of contemporary art, design and architecture taking place across Barriera di Milano in Turin on 3 and 4 October.
Now in its third edition, TRIP transforms the Turin neighbourhood into a widespread exhibition landscape for two days, bringing together around 90 artists and designers across more than 25 locations, including studios, workshops, production spaces, galleries and local organisations. The theme OLTRE (“Beyond”) invites participants to move beyond the boundaries between disciplines, places and perspectives, creating new connections between projects and communities.
It is within this context that IED Torino presents three projects developed by students from the Product Design course in collaboration with Hackability, an organisation working on inclusive design and co-design.
Three different experiences, united by an approach that starts with listening and transforms concrete needs into solutions designed to foster greater independence:
- TOOLS FOR HACK-ABILITY, created by Andrea Fasano, Riccardo Furlan, Camilla Sorbone and Alessandro Reyna Zuniga, stems from work carried out at the Spinal Unit of C.T.O. Turin together with Emidio, 71. The project includes three tools designed to support everyday activities: an adaptive joystick for an electric wheelchair, a brace with interchangeable holders for writing, and a foldable support for tablets, e-books and work materials.
- With REGAIN, Gabriele Amos, Matilde Cimati and Edoardo Manzini explored the theme of independence in everyday gestures, starting from the experience of people living with a cervical spinal cord injury. The result is a wrist and hand brace that allows users to attach and use different utensils intuitively, reducing the need for assistance in everyday activities.
- Finally, MIRANDA BEAUTY CARE KIT, developed by Martina Patelli, Giuseppe Vandelli and Davide Sproviero, stems from the experience of Miranda, 66, a former nurse and co-designer of the project. Following a C6 spinal cord injury, even personal care can become challenging. The system designed by the students includes a modular organiser, dispensers and ergonomic adapters that enable users to manage their daily routine independently. The project demonstrates how 3D printing can become a tool for creating customisable solutions that can be adapted to different contexts.
Three projects that showcase an approach to design that puts people at the centre and engages directly with real-life needs: not simply designing an object, but listening, experimenting, co-designing and testing in real-world contexts how a solution can become part of the life of the person who will use it.
