Phygital design hybridises the physical aspect of design with the development of proposals that are virtual, use augmented reality or are linked to the metaverse dimension. How will this trend affect the conceptualisation and design of future spaces?

As part of the “Mastering you brain” series, João Albuquerque will talk about this topic at the Open Space in IED Barcelona’s Point One facilities next Wednesday, 10 April at 6.30 pm. João is Partner at BIG Barcelona, a group of architects and designers operating in the fields of architecture, product and landscape design, engineering and planning, with offices in Copenhagen, New York, London, Shenzhen, Oslo, Los Angeles and Barcelona.

João Albuquerque began his career at BIG Copenhagen in 2008 and moved to Barcelona in 2019 to help establish a solid base for BIG’s headquarters in the Catalan capital, where he became Design Director and in 2021 was named Partner. João has recently led projects with a strong focus on sustainability throughout Spain, Portugal, the Mediterranean and South America – including, among others, the new office campus for Farfetch in Porto – based on the pillars of sustainability, innovation and well-being, as well as a new highly sustainable office building for the EU in Seville.

“Phygital design” is part of the launch of the Official Master's Degree in Spatial and Digital Environments Design at IED Barcelona. A unique programme in Spain focused on the design of commercial, educational, work and healthcare interior spaces, with an emphasis on the relationships between design and technology, from the cultural dimension, user experience and sustainability.
