Fashion as a language of change: Fashion Design students bring the concept of Transition to the runway, transforming the Murazzi del Po into an urban and symbolic stage.

The Murazzi del Po, the historic heartbeat of Turin’s nightlife, become the evocative runway for the thesis projects of the students from the IED Torino three-year Fashion Design course, A.Y. 2022–2023. An iconic place full of memory, a temple of the night and a refuge of boundless creativity, now hosting collections built around the theme of Transition.

This key word, which guided the students’ work under the direction of coordinator Alessandra Montanaro, was interpreted as knowledge, imagination, and responsibility in facing and leading change. Nature itself teaches the value of movement and transformation, and these young designers have translated that lesson into garments that defy the obvious to create new visions, challenge norms, and turn courage into art.

The result is the auteur fashion film Passaggi urbani, produced by studio Comodo64 and PuntoRec and directed by fashion photographer and filmmaker Ivan Cazzola, who accompanied the students throughout the journey. The runway show footage is paired with live urban music by Max Casacci, creating a vibrant dialogue between fashion, sound, and urban space.

Each collection tells a personal story, a unique vision of Transition:
Some explored the hybridization between humans and other species, reviving leather forgotten in storage for over twelve years and drawing inspiration from gargoyles.
Others reinterpreted the symbolic power of military uniforms—real armors of memory, identity, and belonging.
Some drew inspiration from visionary female artists such as Giosetta Fioroni, Niki de Saint Phalle, and Erwin Wurm.
And others explored the passage between light and darkness, both physical and metaphorical, as a key moment of transformation.

Embracing change means giving design cultural and political meaning—going beyond function to become an authentic, democratic language. That’s the message that powerfully emerges from these students’ creations: true acts of poetic resistance, capable of imagining the impossible to erase the unacceptable, and of turning life into a testament of passion.
