From 14 to 18 May, a newsstand of creativity presented the first two issues of Notes on Plural Intelligences alongside a selection of the best Italian and international magazines, accompanied by a programme of talks and workshops that explored themes of design, publishing and contemporary communication.

Il design told its story at the Turin International Book Fair with EDICOLA IED, the new space celebrating creativity through which, from 14 to 18 May, IED took part for the first time in Italy’s most important publishing event. A project that took shape from the idea of the book as one of the places where design becomes culture — between typography, image, editorial design and communication — and developed through a format dedicated to the world of magazines, understood as a contemporary device for research and storytelling, capable of creating dialogue between languages, practices and visions.

Here the first two issues of Notes on Plural Intelligences were presented, the Journal launched by IED on the occasion of its 60th anniversary and conceived as an open platform for reflection on the role of design today. Available in print and digital format, the publication was accompanied by a selection of the best national and international magazines on design, fashion, visual arts and communication, curated by Libreria Luxemburg, offering an overview of the most current ideas and trends in contemporary visual culture.

Inside the stand, hosted within the Oval Lingotto, stand U118, a program of talks and workshops unfolded throughout the day, intertwining with more informal and convivial moments, from breakfast to aperitivo, which became opportunities for exchange and connection thanks to the support of Costadoro and Beva Can. Below was the programme of events focusing on themes, practices and perspectives of contemporary design culture, through contributions by designers, editors, illustrators and curators:

Thursday 14 May

6 pm | Talk
Future Memories. Living archives, open futures

Sara Fortunati (Director, Circolo del Design), Cristina Moro (Curator, Cini Boeri Archive). Introduced by Carlotta Crosera (Head of Academic Portfolio and Dissemination, IED Group)

Today the archive is a living heritage where preservation, interpretation and dissemination intertwine. In the digital era, the responsibility emerges to make it accessible and meaningful for new generations, as a space capable of activating memory, critical thinking and imagination for the future.

Friday 15 May

11 am | Workshop for high school students
The thread of images

Maia Sambonet, Claude Marzotto (Studio Obelo)

A collaborative editing experience to activate new stories starting from the IED visual archive. Observing and comparing, discovering analogies and tracing connections, giving shape to shared visions through a sequence of pages.

6 pm | Talk
Drawing, in the present

Sara Maragotto (Coordinator of the Undergraduate Programme in Illustration, IED Torino), Marta Giunipero (illustrator), Andrea Opretti (illustrator)

Two emerging paths explore illustration as a space for research, relationships and rhythm of the gaze. A dialogue on the possibilities of contemporary drawing, between experimentation and the construction of a personal language and artistic practice within an unstable and saturated present.

Saturday 16 May

11 am | Talk
Time is present. Designing the Common

Angela Rui (Global Scientific Lead – Design, IED Group), Barbara Brondi (IN Residence)

Responding to the changing needs of society and the environment implies rethinking design as a transformative practice. The new catalogue of the 4th Porto Design Biennale, by proposing alternative ways of inhabiting the present, opens up a reflection on designing for the commons, contributing to imagining more equitable and resilient models.

6 pm | Talk
Making dust shine. Inside the new Vernissage

Jacopo Bedussi (Curator and journalist), Luigi Cerutti (CEO, Allemandi Editore)

Born in the 1980s as a photo-news magazine, Allemandi’s editorial project returns to newsstands with a new format that reads the present through images, writing and creative direction, exploring art, fashion and visual culture through hybrid languages and new narratives.

Sunday 17 May

11 am | Talk
Borderless. The contemporary magazine as an interdisciplinary space between publishing, experimentation and new media

Matteo Milaneschi (Coordinator of the Master Programme in Communication and Creative Technologies, IED Torino), Giovanni Cavalleri (Paper Paper Studio), Francesca Pionati (Il Magazine)

Between print and new media, magazines today take shape as interdisciplinary laboratories that welcome communities, diverse languages, collaborative practices, and new ways of production and distribution. An opportunity to reflect on this format as an open and constantly evolving space for research.

6 pm | Talk
Notes on Plural Intelligences

Riccardo Balbo (Academic Director, IED Group), Maurizio Francesconi (Corriere della Sera), Alessandro Martini (Corriere della Sera)

On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of its foundation, IED explores design as a force for exchange and reflection within today’s transformations, guided by curiosity, care and imagination, through a collection of voices and perspectives observing ways of thinking, acting and interacting in the contemporary world.

Monday 18 May

11 am | Workshop for high school students
Mythology of communication. The gods never died, they only changed brands

Damiano Gui (Coordinator of the Undergraduate Programme in Communication Design, IED Torino)

What do Ulysses and The North Face, Daedalus and Apple, Prometheus and Balenciaga have in common? For millennia, stories have followed recurring archetypes, now reinterpreted by brands. Between myth, psychoanalysis and communication, an exploration of the languages of classical culture as tools to read the present and activate new creative ideas.

IED meets schools and students

The stand will also serve as an information space, a direct point of contact for those wishing to learn more about courses and study opportunities, through materials, content and meetings with the IED team.

As part of the Turin International Book Fair programme dedicated to high schools, IED is also taking part with a series of events aimed at students interested in the languages of communication, publishing and visual design. Within Bookstock, the large area dedicated to younger audiences, it presents Images that speak, a workshop led by lecturer Cecilia Campironi to explore illustration as both a practice and a profession.

As part of Book-Makers, the project connecting students, universities and publishing professionals, IED will also take part in the events So you want to work in publishing?, featuring Matteo Milaneschi (Coordinator of the Master Programme in Communication and Creative Technologies, IED Torino), dedicated to educational paths and skills for entering the publishing sector; Graficology. Designing the Present with Andrea Viberti (Coordinator of the Undergraduate Programme in Graphic Design and Art Direction, IED Torino), on editorial design as a tool for interpreting the present beyond its purely formal dimension; and The professions of writing today, with Damiano Gui (Coordinator of the Undergraduate Programme in Communication Design, IED Torino), a discussion on contemporary professions connected to writing, content creation and the new languages of communication.

IED Torino will also take part in the talk “Growing with Greenery. From Urban Gardens to the Social Nursery”, scheduled for Friday, May 15 at 4:45 PM at the City of Turin and Metropolitan City of Turin Space (Hall 1, D102). The panel, featuring Councillor Francesco Tresso, will also involve Paola Zini, Director of IED Torino, together with several students who will present communication projects developed within the Graphic Design and Communication Design courses, highlighting the role of design in enhancing green spaces as places for education, inclusion, and participation.
