In-person event
From 8 to 10 May 2026, Circolo del Design in Turin will host The Politic of Play, a workshop led by Gabriel Fontana and organised in collaboration with IED Torino as part of the programme of the Master in Social Ecological Design. The event is part of the Master’s educational and cultural activities, which explore design as a critical tool for imagining new forms of coexistence, inclusion, and social transformation.
The workshop investigates the potential of play and sport as spaces for collective imagination and change. Throughout the programme, participants will be invited to rewrite the rules, games, and rituals that shape the way we play and, more deeply, the way we live together. Through the construction of imagined social models and fictional sports federations, the workshop opens up a reflection on the relationship between design, social norms, identity, and belonging.
Gabriel Fontana’s approach belongs to the field of social design and uses play as a tool to make visible the mechanisms that regulate inclusion and exclusion. This perspective directly resonates with the Master in Social Ecological Design, which focuses on design practices capable of activating critical awareness, collective experimentation, and new social scenarios. Among Fontana’s best-known projects is Multiform, also presented at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and recently acquired by MoMA as the first queer sport to enter the museum’s collection.
The workshop will be held in English at Circolo del Design, Via San Francesco da Paola 17, Turin, and is aimed at those who wish to explore design as a practice capable of activating new social and cultural possibilities.
