How can past designs inspire new ideas for today’s workspaces?
This is the starting point of the project led by Davide Masserini, co-founder of (AB)NORMAL Studio, who is teaching in the second year of Product Design BA Course at IED Milano.
(AB)NORMAL is an interdisciplinary studio founded in 2017 by architects Mattia Inselvini, Davide Masserini and Luigi Savio. The studio combines architectural expertise with creative vision to deliver projects across multiple fields. Its services span architecture, interior design, product design, scenography, exhibition design and brand experience, working across diverse sectors including art, fashion, music and design.
The course invites students of the BA in Product Design to explore company archives and discover office products that are now out of production, forgotten or never brought to market. Chairs, tables, bookcases, cabinets and cubicles become case studies to analyze, exploring their relationship with the body and the space around them and reinterpreting their characteristics to meet today’s needs.
The course is structured around a series of exercises combining research, analysis and redesign. Sessions with Masserini, along with visits to showrooms and company archives, will give students the opportunity to explore historical products, materials and production processes.
