Design as a relationship between objects, people and the environment, through research, model-making and the observation of everyday life.
An object gains meaning through its relationship with people and the space in which it is used. This idea is at the heart of the course led by Keiji Takeuchi, who teaches second-year students in IED Milano’s Product Design BA’s course.
Born in Fukuoka, Japan, and raised in New Zealand, Takeuchi has gained international experience and founded his studio in Milan in 2015. His approach focuses on the simplicity of objects and how they connect with everyday life.
During the course, students will explore the relationships between objects, people and the environment, with the aim of developing a clear story around each product. The project goes beyond the object's form, also considering its context, how it is used and the experience it creates.
A key part of the course will be the creation of scale models in the classroom, supported by photographic documentation. Through experimentation and observation, students will test their design choices and explore how form, context and function help define the meaning of a product.
