As part of EXPOSED Torino Photo Festival, IED presents the second chapter of the three-year project Ti vorrei dire, developed in collaboration with Gallerie d'Italia - Torino, a part of Intesa Sanpaolo
At twenty, people begin to look at the world with new eyes. Its complexity becomes clearer, along with its contradictions and the fractures that run through it. After exploring desires and inner lives with The Dreamers, IED turns its gaze outward and presents The Searchlights, a Public Portfolio Review showcasing the work of 18 students from the Photography Undergraduate Programs at IED Torino, Milano and Roma, invited to reflect on what it means to represent the present today.
The projects map out the urgencies of our time through the perspective of a new generation. Ecological and climate crises, dynamics of power and representation, identity, mental health, precarity, memory and narratives of the present run through the works on display, shaping a collective account that restores complexity to what is too often reduced to a label.
In the face of this reality, the point of view from which we observe becomes crucial. The title The Searchlights evokes the image of a beam of light cutting through darkness to make visible what remains at the margins. In the same way, photography brings forward what demands attention and becomes a tool for awareness and positioning, in the choice of whom to give voice to and how.
The event at Gallerie d'Italia - Torino, a part of Intesa Sanpaolo takes the form of a dynamic and interactive portfolio review, encouraging dialogue between the authors, the public and special lecturers from the worlds of photography and art, as well as curators, gallerists and journalists, who are invited to comment on the works and activate a lively and participatory exchange.
At the centre of the experience is the table, which displays the photographic works housed in a box designed by students from Visual Communication Design at IED Firenze, who also created the visual identity of The Searchlights. This is where the images are leafed through, discussed and set in motion, turning each station into a space for encounter, listening and collective reflection.
The Searchlights is the second chapter of Ti vorrei dire, a three-year project developed in collaboration with Gallerie d'Italia - Torino, a part of Intesa Sanpaolo. The Dreamers was the first chapter of the project, dedicated to the desires and inner lives of people in their twenties.
