The Bachelor of Arts in Photography in Photography at IED Torino explores the connections between image, art and society, promoting emerging artistic practices and providing tools for personal research and preparation for the professional world. The programme integrates contemporary photography, new media and visual culture, with a particular focus on innovation and experimentation. Turin, alternating between industrial contexts, natural landscapes and major cultural institutions, becomes a dynamic laboratory for art and photography, also thanks to collaborations with cultural organisations.
The IED programme is structured over three years, during which design is integrated with cultural knowledge, dialogue with professionals, technical skills and the use of innovative tools.
First Year: Students acquire the theoretical and technical foundations of photography, exploring tools and languages through practical exercises, projects and workshops. They study the basics of analogue and digital shooting, post-production with the Adobe Suite, and the management of lighting and studio practice. At the same time, they deepen their knowledge of the history of photography and visual art, laying the groundwork for a critical understanding of the image.
Second Year: Techniques learned previously are refined and applied to more complex projects, developing a personal authorial vision. Genres such as reportage, artistic and conceptual photography, portraiture and documentary photography are explored. The design approach becomes more methodical and personal, supported by meetings with industry professionals, workshops, exhibition visits, collaborations with galleries and artistic residencies.
Third Year: Focused on advanced design, consolidating the student’s authorial identity and preparing a professional portfolio and thesis project. Through critical texts, exhibition design and book design, students acquire skills useful for exhibitions, publications and professional presentations. The dissertation project represents the culmination of the programme: a personal and complex development that integrates all acquired skills, designed to be presented professionally and evaluated by a panel of industry experts.
A distinctive feature of the course is the focus on video, enabling students to learn the basics of audiovisual production, from concept to post-production, enriching photographic practice with the temporal dimension of video. This multidisciplinary approach prepares students for a constantly evolving market, where photography, video, and digital communication coexist and merge.
