14 young designers and a collective vision of fashion as a cultural practice. Special Mentor Danielle Kwateng, from New York: “Collective creativity reminds us of a fundamental truth about fashion: nothing happens in isolation”.
A collective work rather than a sequence of individual projects, in which the true product on display is not the garment, but the show itself.
With the fashion show THE PROCESS, Istituto Europeo di Design brings to Milano Fashion Week a shared reflection on fashion as a cultural practice.
On the runway at MUBA – Rotonda di via Besana, 60 looks from 12 collections created by 14 young fashion designers form a unified narrative in which distinct identities come together and looks are taken apart and interwoven. Each vision reshapes and amplifies the next, also through the junction looks placed between collections. Combining garments by different designers, they connect creative worlds and break with the traditional sequence of collections.
“As a school, we want to draw attention to fashion’s invisible dimension, which goes beyond what we wear: a way of interpreting the present, shaping new imaginaries and connecting bodies, materials, knowledge and identities,” says Danilo Venturi, Director of IED Milano. “Schools are an integral part of the fashion system and one of the first links in its value chain. This is where talent finds a method, ideas become projects and the foundations of future careers are built. Taking part in Milan Fashion Week means recognising the role that education deserves”.
Umberto Sannino, Head of Fashion School at IED Milano, is the Creative Director of THE PROCESS: “The show tells a shared story in which differences remain recognisable while entering into dialogue. Through a fashion show, a school can also restore fashion’s capacity to dream and to dare, while revealing everything that comes before the final result: research, discipline, exchange and method”.
The 14 designers on the catwalk: Amina Aubakirova, Camilla Barazzetta, Keyra Cannas, Giulio Censori, Costanza Barbieri, Greta Ciabrelli, Mattia Ginexi, Corinne Librizzi, Nicoletta Marazia, Michelle Paglione, Alessandro Paolucci, Andrea Spinelli, Zeminghui Zhu e Maria Zybaczynski.
Ahead of the fashion show, the young creatives had the opportunity to meet Danielle Kwateng, a media and culture executive and currently Executive Managing Editor of Harper’s Bazaar US, for a special mentorship session. “At its core, fashion is about clothing people. It is an expression of humanity and care. At a time when images can be produced faster than ever, craftsmanship, tactile experience, responsible choices and the time it takes to develop an idea matter even more. THE PROCESS gives young designers a chance to explore these values through different creative perspectives. It also speaks to a central truth of fashion: nothing happens in isolation. From research to production, every project depends on the people and skills that come together along the way.”
