When discussing sustainability, the debate often focuses on environmental impacts and the responsible management of resources. But what does it mean, in practical terms, for a school that educates the next generation of designers, creatives and professionals capable of driving transformation?

For IED, sustainability is a commitment that permeates every dimension of the institution and involves students, lecturers, staff, partners and communities.

It means integrating into education a design-oriented approach that is mindful of the interconnections between the environment, society, culture and the economy. It means teaching that being a designer involves taking responsibility for one’s own choices and considering the impact that ideas, products and services can have on people and the planet.

It also means promoting an education capable of creating shared value, through ongoing dialogue with businesses, institutions, organisations and communities, transforming projects developed by students into tangible opportunities for research, innovation and positive impact.

Finally, it means building an organisation that operates responsibly and transparently, monitors its impacts, measures its results and promotes continuous improvement in relation to the environment, people and society.
