A game for learning sign language that supports the acquisition of essential communication skills and strengthens emotional bonds.

B:abble is an interactive, educational board designed to help users expand their linguistic knowledge of sign language (ASL).

It is conceived so that children from the age of two, together with their parents or caregivers, can take part in an immersive activity that allows them to connect intellectually and emotionally through play, encouraging creativity by building words and practising hand‑spelling, or “fingerspelling”.

Using play as a tool for acquiring new language skills and integrating ASL, B:abble has a significant impact on children’s development and on their emotional connection with parents or caregivers. It also promotes the development of fine motor skills, hand‑eye coordination, and shared attention.

The game consists of two central rectangular wooden pieces, hollowed out with different shapes and depths. The upper side allows the alphabet pieces/signs to be stored and organised alphabetically, while the reverse side is an “open field” designed for sensory exploration, allowing interaction with the alphabet pieces through embossing on kinetic sand.

This project was exhibited in the “Class of” space at Dutch Design Week 2024, within the “Relations of Care” initiative presented by the IED Group.
