Furniture made from construction and demolition waste
The construction industry is seeking new ways to become more circular, reducing the extraction of raw materials and making the most of resources. In this context, Natalia Sánchez presents her Rojo Oxidado project as part of the solution.
Rojo Oxidado proposes the collection and treatment of construction and demolition waste (bricks, stones, tiles, concrete, etc.) to transform it into functional furniture, thus giving these materials a second life and promoting the principles of the circular economy.
Sánchez carefully explores different techniques for researching and experimenting with this waste, such as its selection, classification and transformation, in order to generate the new material that will be used to make recycled furniture. The result is a high-quality, highly durable material.
In addition to the environmental dimension, this project also aims to highlight the aesthetic value and uniqueness that can arise from the reuse of these materials, as the resulting furniture has a rustic and unpolished aesthetic, with textures, colours and patterns that tell a unique story of its origin in the construction industry and give it a dimension of authenticity. Furthermore, this proposal closes the circle, as we return the materials with which a home was built back to that home.
Natalia Sánchez Beltrán's Rojo Oxidado project received an Honourable Mention in Strategy in the Product Design category at Graduation Day 2023.
