Spacecraft on the surface of Mars next to an astronaut

Academic year

2024/2025

Project by the MarsLife thesis laboratory, in collaboration with IED Rome, the Italian Space Agency (ASI), and Caimi

A space station with the functions of a logistics centre for repairs, restocking, an emergency unit, and telecommunications, including an integrated monocoque planetary exploration vehicle with modular personal cabins designed for movement between the station and the vehicle, tailored to the role of each astronaut.

The cabins, which feature a rest area, kitchen, work area, and gym, are transferable between the space station and the shuttle, ensuring seamless transitions, maintaining personal space, functionality, and research capabilities throughout the mission.

In the first phase, the project envisions building the station near the Moon and then entering Martian orbit, where the crew, known as the “R7 Team”, will be composed of seven specialised scientists (an atmospheric scientist, an astrobiologist, an aerospace engineer, a geologist, a physicist, a medical expert, and an astrobotanist) whose aim will be to study everything from climate and radiation to the search for life and growing food on Mars.
