A gamified digital experience to simplify, humanise, and foster engagement with critical media analysis for young people

The project addresses the growing challenge of misinformation in the digital age by designing an interactive app that enables users to identify and debunk false information in a playful yet impactful way.

Inspired by the rebellious spirit of punk culture, the app leverages speculative design to create an engaging tool that encourages critical thinking. Named ‘YapTrap’, the app allows users to “trap” any misinformation they encounter, providing real-time verification from trusted sources while using humour and relatable language to de-escalate confrontations.

It incorporates gamification by rewarding users for debunking falsehoods, offering points, leaderboards, and friendly competition. By making fact-checking accessible and enjoyable, ‘YapTrap’ aims to bridge divides and foster media literacy in a way that resonates with younger audiences and those underserved by current information literacy tools.
