Explore UX and Product Design methods to research user needs, design interfaces, build prototypes and improve digital experiences.
The UX & Product Design with AI Summer Course at IED Barcelona introduces you to the digital product design process, from researching user needs to creating and evaluating prototypes. You will learn to identify opportunities, frame design problems and create human-centred experiences that respond to user needs and product objectives.
Through a hands-on team project, you will explore research methods, information architecture, user journeys, UX/UI design, interactive prototyping and usability testing. You will develop a value proposition, shape an interface and improve your solution based on testing findings.
You will also discover how artificial intelligence can support selected stages of the design process, from research to generating alternatives, and what to consider when AI becomes part of a digital product. At the end of the course, you will present your prototype and explain the decisions behind its development.
From problem to prototype: research, design and test human-centred digital products.
The course is built around one digital product design project connecting six academic blocks: UX and product context, research, experience strategy, interface design, prototyping, testing and iteration. It combines guided workshops, collaborative project work and critique sessions.
You will begin with a design challenge and investigate its context through desk research, benchmarking, short interviews and observation. Based on your findings, you will identify user needs and define a value proposition. You will then develop user journeys, information architecture, interaction flows and wireframes, before building a prototype to test and improve.
At selected stages, you will explore how AI can support design work and the implications of integrating it into a digital product. The final presentation will connect your research, concept, prototype and testing with the reasoning behind your design decisions.
This course is aimed at professionals and creative practitioners seeking to develop their UX and Product Design skills. It is particularly relevant to graphic designers, art directors, communication and marketing professionals, developers and innovation specialists.
It is suitable for those who want to bring user research, product strategy and interaction design into their practice or move further into digital product design. Previous technical preparation is required and assessed through a portfolio and interview.
The course follows the full UX and Product Design process: understanding user needs, framing a problem, designing an experience and validating an interactive prototype. Rather than focusing only on specific tools, it helps you make informed design decisions.
You will work on one collaborative project, connecting research with product strategy, interface design and usability testing. You will refine your proposal based on user feedback and communicate both your outcome and the reasoning behind it.
You will also explore the role of artificial intelligence as a support for design and as a technology embedded in digital products. You will learn to assess when it offers meaningful value and what it means for transparency, privacy and user control.
The course connects six academic blocks through one digital product project: UX and Product Design context, research, experience strategy, interface design and prototyping, testing and iteration, and final presentation.
UX, Product & AI Context
Explore contemporary UX and Product Design from a human-centred perspective. Examine how the field is evolving and distinguish between using AI to support design work and incorporating AI into product functionality. Starting from a project brief, you will form teams, map an initial problem and define research questions.
Research & Problem Framing
Research your project context through desk research, benchmarking, short interviews and observation. Synthesise findings to identify user needs and frame a clear design problem. You will also explore how AI can support information synthesis while checking its outputs against research evidence.
Experience Strategy & Interaction
Develop a product concept and value proposition based on your findings. Define scenarios, user journeys, information architecture, user flows and interaction principles to structure the experience. Consider where including AI in the product creates genuine value and where it may not be necessary.
Interface & Prototyping
Turn your concept into wireframes, interface designs and an interactive mid- to high-fidelity prototype. Work with visual hierarchy, UI fundamentals, components and accessibility. You may use AI to explore alternatives and speed up prototyping while maintaining design consistency and quality control.
Test, Iterate & Trust
Conduct usability testing, interpret feedback and improve your prototype based on evidence. You will also examine error states, uncertainty, explainability, trust and user control in the design of products with AI-enabled functionality.
Product Futures & Final Crit
Review your proposal in its wider product, business and ethical context, including the opportunities and limitations of AI. Prepare a narrative connecting research, concept, prototype and testing, then present your work and explain the reasoning behind your design decisions and possible next steps.
