On March 11 at 11:00 am, Classroom 11 at IED Madrid Gran Vía will host a masterclass delivered by Rossana Orlandi and Giulio Cappellini, two of the most influential figures in international design. The session is part of the Italian Design Day celebrations and is organized in collaboration with the Embassy of Italy in Madrid.
This masterclass will offer students and the IED Madrid creative community a unique opportunity to hear firsthand from two leading voices who have redefined the contemporany design landscape from contemporany design landscape from complementary perspectives: nurturing emerging talent and shaping creative direction within industry.
Rossana Orlandi, widely recognized as one of the foremost champions of experimental design, transformed a former industrial space in Milan in 2002 into a gallery that is now a global reference point for discovering new creative voices. A visionary and pioneer, she has played a key role in launching internationally acclaimed designers such as Maarten Baas, Formafantasma, and Nacho Carbonell. In 2026, she was honored with the Madrid Design Festival Award, consolidating her role as a bridge between creativity, industry, and the public.
Giulio Cappellini, architect and entrepreneur, is considered one of the great innovators of contemporary Italian design. As creative director of Cappellini, he has successfully combined Italian artisanal tradition with formal experimentation, championing designers such as Jasper Morrison, Marc Newson, Marcel Wanders, the Bouroullec brothers, and Nendo. In 2022, he received the Compasso d’Oro, one of the highest recognitions in international design.
The masterclass will take place the day after the event “RE-DESIGN: regenerating spaces, objects, ideas and relationships,” which will be held on March 10 at the Embassy of Italy. Moderated by Beatriz Amann, Academic Director of IED Madrid, this dialogue will bring together Rossana Orlandi and Giulio Cappellini alongside Álvaro Catalán de Ocón, National Design Award 2023, to reflect on design as a driver of transformation and regeneration in a constantly evolving global context.
With this double event,IEDMadrid reinforces its commitment to critical thinking, innovation, and the international projection of design, creating a space for direct dialogue between students and leading figures who have anticipated trends, discovered talent, and redefined the relationship between industry, culture, and society.
