During London Design Festival, IED and UAL organized three panel discussions and a Keynote speech to debate on Transdisciplinary Design at the V&A Museum

On September 2023, IED discussed the meaning and implications of Transdisciplinary Design in London during the Global Design Forum. Along with UAL, we organized three panel discussions and a Keynote speech at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London on occasion of the London Design Festival.

The three panels explored the theory and the context of this new approach, talked about possible implications in educations and how its potential application to today's real design practices.

“It’s a matter of changing a focus to application to the focus of implication” stated IED Academic Director Riccardo Balbo in the first panel along with Michael Thomson (Design Connect), Christopher Laing, (Deaf Architecture Front) and Joycelyn Longdon (ClimateinColour). They discussed about the Theory and the Context of the Transdisciplinary Design, stating that it is all about inclusivity and talked about the importance of a common language and vocabulary to create a real inclusion.

The second panel of the day was moderated by Riccardo Balbo and he was joined by Angela Rui (IED), Todd Eckert (Tin Drum) and Wouter Haspeslagh (Granstudio/IED). After talking about the concept of caring, they explored the boundaries of disciplines, generations and systems.

Caroline Till (Franklin Till) moderated the last panel of the day. It was time to talk about real practices with Moritz Waldemeyer (Studio Waldemeyer), Tiff Radmore (London College of Fashion), Jason Holley (Universal Design Studio) and Natsai Audrey Chieza (Faber Futures). Soft skills emerged as the central asset anyone applying a transdisciplinary approach must have: friction and discussion are part of the process; we need that to find a way forward.

Finally, Dr. Nelly Ben Hayoun-Stépanian talked about her research on multidisciplinary practice supporting youth countercultures, experimental practices and pluralistic futures.
