"Designing Today", a critical reflection on today’s design perspectives
On the occasion of the Open Day on July 10th, 2025, IED Milan will host a special event featuring Formafantasma, the design studio based in Milan and Rotterdam, founded by Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin.
The talk, titled “Designing Today” will take place on Thursday, July 10, starting at 6:00 PM, and will be a moment of discussion on the contemporary trajectories of design. The event will be moderated by Angela Rui, Head of Master of Arts at IED Milano.
FORMAFANTASMA
Formafantasma is a research-based design studio that investigates the ecological, historical, political, and social forces capable of influencing and shaping the discipline of design. Founded in 2009, the studio has consistently advocated for the importance of a new design sensitivity, one that merges with a holistic vision of both design thinking and practice.
Their work aims to foster a deeper understanding of both natural and built environments, promoting transformative interventions through the material, technical, social, and discursive possibilities of design. The studio works across a wide range of areas, from product design to spatial design, from strategic consultancy to self-initiated research, always applying a rigorous and context-sensitive approach to process and detail.
Formafantasma’s portfolio is marked by a coherent and refined visual language. The coexistence of commissioned and self-initiated projects encourages a continuous exchange between research and application, offering a critical and in-depth perspective on the contemporary design industry. The studio also acknowledges the legacy of industrial production as a central component of the designer’s role and experience in today's society, while addressing its historical contribution to environmental instability.
