Fashion gets a fresh start at the School: a designer and lecturer with a multifaceted profile at the head of Milan's Fashion School. “Strong cultural foundations are needed to build an authorial experience, an expression of authenticity”.

Umberto Sannino is the new Head of the Fashion School at IED Milano. He has already been involved with the school as a lecturer for ten years, three of which he coordinated the three-year degree  (DAPL) in Fashion Design.

It is precisely at the School and through research that we believe fashion must start again: “Fashion reflects the spirit of the times, has an impact on society and therefore carries political implications”, underlines Danilo Venturi, Director of IED Milano. - Whether design, strategy or storytelling, fashion must be able to provide answers to urgent needs such as the widespread loss of creative spirit, a resource that thrives on diversity and awareness. The apparent superficiality of fashion actually reveals a much deeper dimension: it hides what we want to reveal about ourselves. Fashion can find new life in the school because it brings with it issues of identity: the freedom of those who create it as well as those who wear it, and a response to the need to express who one is”.

Umberto Sannino: about the new head of the IED Milano Fashion School

A designer with a multifaceted profile, Umberto Sannino, the new Head of Fashion School IED Milano, boasts a career that spans teaching and freelance consultancy, embracing international contexts and with an interdisciplinary approach that is marked by a focus on sustainability and awareness, the value of inclusion and the comparison of cultures. His experience extends to managing and coordinating custom made collections, with specific skills in trend forecasting and styling. In terms of teaching, since 2023 he has coordinated the Master of Arts (DASL) at IED Firenze in Textile Design. Material Consciousness & Circularity. Umberto Sannino: strong cultural foundations to construct an authorial experience

“I believe that the creative pursuit of beauty and the development of knowledge are fundamental values for a School, the duty of which is also to inspire, to enhance every talent and to make extraordinary what seems ordinary”, comments the new Head of the IED Milano Fashion School, Umberto Sannino. “Every design and fashion student must know how to conduct research, to move in space, time and between the most varied genres, and then condense the results into a concept, a garment, an exhibition. Only with strong cultural foundations can we build an authorial experience, an expression of authenticity”.
