From February 19 to March 7, IED Madrid Design District hosts Experimental Lighting: Living Matter and Lux, featuring collections developed by students around research with living materials.
Organized in groups, students work with materials cultivated during the course —such as kombucha, mycelium, and sprouts— to create pieces integrating research, structure, surface, and lighting systems. Each lamp explores the relationship between living matter and technology, as well as the interaction of light, transparency, weight, and lightness.
The exhibition reflects on the origin, life, and cycle of materials, questioning conventional uses and expanding their possibilities in contemporary design. Through experimentation and collaborative work, it generates a dialogue between creativity and sustainability, positioning academic practice as an active laboratory for new, more conscious production methods connected with the environment.
