A meeting dedicated to Character Design with Carlos Grangel

Carlos Grangel, the legendary character designer who, together with his brother Jordi, shaped the unforgettable characters of Corpse Bride, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, Hotel Transylvania, Madagascar, How to Train Your Dragon, and other iconic animated films, will be the protagonist of the EXTRA Tour, a new format created by Artis and co-produced by IED Firenze.

Here are the scheduled events:

May 21

  • ART & SKETCH
    5:00 PM – 6:30 PM – Palazzo Vecchio, Piazza della Signoria, Florence
    An exclusive live drawing session with one of the artists who helped define the history of international animation. In collaboration with MUS.E, the event takes place inside the stunning Palazzo Vecchio, a crossroads between Renaissance and contemporary art. Attendance is reserved for a select number of students and professionals. By invitation only.
     
  • EXTRA MOVIE – Special Screening of “Corpse Bride”
    8:00 PM – 10:30 PM – Cinema Giunti/Odeon, Piazza degli Strozzi, Florence
    To mark the 20th anniversary of Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride, a special version of the film will be screened with a special introduction by Carlos Grangel, character designer of the film, and guest appearance by Gianluca Folì, illustrator and author of the EXTRA Tour 2025 poster art. Autograph session starts at 8:00 PM. Open to the public. Tickets available at www.giuntiodeon.com

Collective Talk
10:00 AM – 1:00 PM – Cinema La Compagnia, Via Cavour 50, Florence
A major public event dedicated to the art of character design and the new frontiers of contemporary animation, with the special participation of Carlos Grangel, creator of characters for animated masterpieces such as Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, Corpse Bride, How to Train Your Dragon, Hotel Transylvania, Madagascar, Spirit, Balto, and The Road to El Dorado.

The talk will also feature guest contributions from leading Italian animation studios and professionals:

  • Gianluca Folì, illustrator and art director
  • Doghead Animation, 3D animation specialists
  • Carobaleno Studio, an emerging force in visual storytelling
  • Panebarco Studio, pioneers of digital animation in Italy
  • Nora Studio, an independent creative studio

An unmissable opportunity to meet one of the world’s most renowned character designers and to explore the vibrant creativity of Italy’s contemporary animation scene. The event is produced by Artis and IED, with the patronage of ASIFA Italia, the Italian association of animated film authors.
