Exploring the principles of sustainability and the circular economy, students developed innovative proposals to reformulate these spaces from the perspective of fashion, product, interior and graphic design
In a world dominated by fast fashion, the environmental impact of the production and consumption of clothing has reached critical levels. By rethinking the laundry service and space, with a focus on second-hand clothing, it is possible to change the narrative and focus the discourse on a circular economy where the useful life of all garments can be extended, thus contributing to a reduction in waste.
With this objective in mind, eight teams of second year IED Barcelona students collaborated with GirbauLAB, the space created by the Girbau Group to generate value beyond the laundrette through collaborative innovation, proposing various solutions to reformulate this concept from the perspectives of fashion, product, interior and graphic design.
The students developed innovative proposals that incorporate relevant values as such as customisation, socialisation and collaboration.
Ideas such as the design of civic spaces where community and meetings between people are central axes; new business models to buy or rent clothes and find inspiration for future collections; sustainable coworking proposals that combine design, fashion and the treatment of textiles in the same place; and laundry services for young people and families, are just some examples of the proposals presented.
The final results of this project from the interdisciplinary subject “Sustainability: The new second-hand laundry” were supervised by IED teacher Ariadna Rovira.
